In 1993 I joined id Software. There was a Doom Bible written by Tom Hall, but I only ever got a brief skim of it. I think it was used by the artists and John Romero to some extent, but I didn't really access it. One of my jobs was actually to write the Doom manual.

As part of that I had to name all the enemies. I didn't stretch my brain too far. I mean "Zombie" wasn't a tough call. I changed the "Bruiser Brothers" to "Hell Barons" so there's that.

But I also had to create the Doom guy's backstory. I wrote about five entire pages of story, I discussed his previous career, why he was now embittered, what the corporate experiments on Phobos were about, and so forth. Then I started cutting back on the story. I thought it was too much, and who cared anyw…
