Or why you can't use any old stick
Styluses are either made of conductive material to direct your natural electrical field, or have internal power supply, with a conductive soft tip to reliably transit that to the screen by increasing contact patch.

Nintendo DS uses a resistive aka. pressure touchscreen.
Works by having two conductive layers with a tiny gap between each other
Pressing down on the screen makes the layers touch, which then translates into input
You can use literally anything to press those, but generally soft-ish things are preferred to not damage the layers, hence the rubber tip.
They are slower and can be finicky to use since they require considerable (relatively) force to activate, but are still used in rugged devices since they're simpler, durable since they dont shatter and break, and more "analog" and less sensitive to misinputs (think wet fingers)

the reason why phones sometimes freak out when screen gets wet is cuz the screens emit bit of electricity themselves, and conductive water causes a feedback loop of sorts
