most deaf people can hear, most wheelchair-bound people can walk, most blind people can see, and so on

And then another person came, and started speaking Chinese, and then another speaks Romanian, and then other speaks Swedish, and so on

That's what my hearing is like, I can hear most sounds fine, so I can listen to some music and hear if something's going on so I don't die, but struggle to understand complex sounds like speech, so the majority of people are incomprehensible to me as if they're speaking a language I don't know, and each one is different.

I can manage in-person conversations by lip-reading, environmental context clues, and body language. But none of that exists over a phone call, plus the sound quality is reduced enough for it to matter.

I also have more classical symptoms like messed up directional hearing, tinnitus, auditory hallucinations and such

for example it doesnt make much of a difference if you cant hear at all, or can hear but not enough to hold a conversation
