It's not even that games as a whole are in a bad spot, it's just that no one is trying anything. All the major titles are re-hashing old ideas, and the few new ideas are poorly done. Big studios are just pushing for more money. There's certainly some gems, and certainly some decent games, but the overall state of most big-ticket items and major releases are not up to snuff. Not all indie games are good either, I'm just saying that indie devs have more freedom to do ideas not tried before as a hobby, because they don't expect to make a multi-billion dollar return on investment by making call of duty 47: John gunman returns (but now we included another pop star)™
