AC (Armor Class) basically dictates how hard it is to damage you but that doesn't necessarily mean it's also how hard it is to hit you. Wearing full plate (which gives 18AC, 20 if you have a shield, which is a lot) doesn't turn you into a swift fucking ninja, it just means that you get hit and don't care cause your armor defends you. On the other hand, a person in light armor with 18AC (due to Dex modifier, for example) is a swift fucking ninja who just jumps around and avoids being hit

You do not roll to defend yourself

The attacker rolls to hit you

Like for example, if you have a shield master feat, if you roll to take half damage and you succeed, you take no damage instead
