you can play through the game without the flashlight for combat encounters but you have to have for one good ear, and good reaction times for the fireball dynamic lights

yeah, the whole point of having the flashlight seperate is that you had to sacrifice having your weapon ready for better situational awareness (I think the actual reason Carmack gave was optimization since doom 3 already ran like ass at the time, but thats a seperate point)
