S30v was a step up from VG10 but that's not saying much. They removed carbon and added niobium to encourage harder carbides at lower solution hardness. Turns out it just did shitty. So after a few years Crucible added more carbon back in and called it S45vn. Still not as good of edge as S30v but easier on machines. M4, V4e, MC, Cruwear, and all the mid-tough steels blow it out of the water for the same price.
