They exist to deliver more oof towards those annoying fucking planes that fly around. Your main goal when playing an AA is to target planes, not tanks. You will, however, eventually get access to ammunition that can penetrate some amount of armor, but that doesn't really mean that you can now go out and hunt ground targets. What it does mean is that you can either be a funny guy and slap light tanks that try to flank or punish light tanks that thought you're an easy target. You do have to load the proper ammunition beforehand, however, and it's not really a good idea to load just the armor piercing rounds into your AA (you do want to load some proper AA rounds in order to do your job)

There are also some cases of light tanks being marked as SPAA by the devs because they are fucking stupid

For example this thing is considered an SPAA
It's not

Autocannons are also much better at dealing with higher BR planes as they tend to be more durable

They are just better in general

The only downside is that they tend to be slower and more awkward to get used to
