@upbeat verge you're not necessarily wrong, IPv6 is rarely used for consumer end devices, since, let's be real, it's completely overkill and a pain in the ass to manage, and many ISPs are still stuck on v4. But backbone networks and larger ISPs have switched to IPv6, and IPv6 takes higher and higher percentage of addresses by the day.

Quick lesson:
IPv4 uses 8 binary octets; meaning 32 bits in sets of 8, i won't go into subnets and shit, but basically you get a total of 256 x 256 x 256 x 256 = ~4.2 billion addresses, compared to, idk, a trillion devices that each need an address? Many of those addresses are also reserved and not usable for connecting stuff.
So as you can image, IPv4 started to get saturated a while ago, good thing smart people foresaw that happening a long time ago and devised a wonderful nightmare that is NAT, technique that lets you hide many different IP addresses within a single, static IP address, and for a while, the global internet ran on that, but even NAT started to get saturated real damn quick. in fact, IPv4 became fully saturated at around 2011-2012.

Enter IPv6, initially developed back in the 90s. You get 8 hexadecimal quartets; which translates to 8 sets of 16x4 bits. So you get a total of... I'm not even going to try to calculate that, but basically, you could assign one address to every large celestial body in the observable universe and still have some left.
So if you used that, you could easily have a unique address for every single device on and off the earth for millions of years to come. You could do away with all the NAT bullshit, and all types of routing would be massively simplified.
Problem is that it's a total ass to manage by hand and requires new hard/software, so many ISPs are reluctant to swap to it, and instead only use it for inter-ISP and backbone networks.
