I’m not even trying to be high brow, but I like that the lore is complex. The history of whats going on, and how the lands between functions, is very confusing. Every time a new governing order comes into play, they try to wipe out any remnants of the past. So it’s kind of hard to tell who fucked over who because everything gets scrubbed by the winners. It also helps that the immediate story is comprehensible. It’s usually pretty easy to know who is who, and why shits happening.

My current theory is that “the shadow lands” are a catch all term for things Marika wanted gone. It was never a singular landmass, it’s several places that got crammed together and hidden.
