During the events of the 2nd Great Conflict, he was tasked with a strike force to take a salvaged explosive device found in an ancient underground storage facility to destroy the Leyline in the Mage Tower in Germany. The Leylines were created to cleanse the world of the deep wounds from Nuclear Warfare and repair the damage. Well he got down there, fully expecting a suicide mission, and he had his back to the Leyline when the nuke went off. He was vaporized and his atoms were launched into the Leyline and when the rubble was cleared, he got up and was a living Leyline. Thus he has a powerful healing factor and eats radiation making him essentially invisible.
As a downside, he is slowly losing his mind and he never did tell the United Empire of America about the truth of the events, so up into the 3rd Great Conflict, they just saw him as a very capable guy

Well how things go, is that when the world was "saved" it was caused by a growth of otherworldly Leylines that came from another dimension that were meant to repair the Earth from a deadly communion that caused the mass destruction of the planet, what small clusters of surviving humans in deep bunkers would have then gotten some Magic ability due to the Leylines eating the Heavy Radiation and having the byproduct be a sort of "magical" essence. These "mages" about 2 generations in used various History Books as their guide to the future and decided to micromanage the world as much as they could from the shadows.

Oh shit, okay, that's rad. The slide(?) looked vaguely AK to me, but I've never seen an AK-104 outside of games before. I think I usually see them with a more standard stock, too, but I'm talking out of my ass here. I should've been able to recognize the Glock at least 😭
