You press alt or control and left click on the minimap
It's not the most useful tool out there but it helps give your intention if you want to move up in a specific way( You draw on the minimap only so you can't be too precise with it )

I guess the drawings on the minimap could be reflected on the big map and show up with the players colour and his deired intention maybe a few simple defend attck Or movement or hold type of lines..

Drawing usefulness is definitely limited but chat is super important. I won a game where i realised 2 of my teammates aren't moving. I started giving them written commands and...they obeyed.
So i ended up playing a text RPG simulator from early 2000 where you write commands, your character( well, my 2 teammates in this case) executed them, and i microed my sherman " zippo" around to help them.
Chat isn't useless at all xD
