#Questions about performance

Xbox or PC? I have excellent results on PC (granted I built it about a year ago), most of the issues seem to be Xbox related? And I'm not sure if you're familiar with factory games, but the factory must grow and at the endgame you're CPU/GPU will be the limiting factor no matter HOW good the game is optimized. Devs can only do so much with us crazy players going ham lol
IMO DO NOT miss this game, under any circumstance, it's incredible
nobody posts on discord when they have no issues and everything is working perfectly
I have played factorio and satisfactory.
Sorry I was referring to PC, I should have specified 🙂
May I ask what your fps is like in the mid-endgame and what system you are running? :D
yes but I hope you're sitting down as it's a long answer lol
I'll grab some water in the meantime then :D
specs are ez, GeForce 4070Ti and i7 13700K
but the framerate depends on where I am. It's EXTREMELY advantageous to build smaller factories all spread out so the game doesnt need to render one massive factory all at once. the hand crafted map is VERY well laid out to accomplish this. It's practically encouraged
I'm at as late game as possible with only personal goals to work on atm (my trophy room is coming along nicely) and at best I get 63 frames (for example when im smaller/modular factories away from main area) and 30-35 when in the heart of it all. It's worth noting that every patch I gain like 3-5 frames because the amazing devs are doing optimization stuff
also, FWIW, there's some building strats that can be beneficial, like building the large foundations and not the 1x1 tiles. It just reduces the overall UPS count
but that kinda stuff won't come up until you're like 40 hours into it, and we can continue the convo further at that point haha
hope I helped!
Helped a lot, thank you :)
Just one more question, what resolution are you running the game at?
2560x1440
Bought it.
Thanks for helping out :)
hype!
Hey there, and I am glad to hear that you are giving the game a try!
Everything Terawatt said is correct, though I would add some more emphasis on the CPU part. Since the game does rely on this so heavily, sometimes, someone with a great, cutting-edge GPU can still experience lower performance if they are bottlenecked by their CPU. If they are not as used to factory games as you folks are, but games from other genres, this may not make as much sense to them and can be frustrating.
We are also actively working on optimization, and our PC users have definitely benefitted the most, though we are hoping to make life better for all of our console users as soon as possible, too!
One of our generic go-to hints for performance is also to use bigger Base Building pieces once you start acquiring them rather than 1x1 bits for floors and such, which Terawatt mentioned too. Even though it seems logical for more objects to equal more demanding resource needs, we hope this is not always true, especially since lots of people like the Power Floors's shiny lights, haha.
Hope you have fun!
<---this Groundbreaker got a little side hustle going on recruiting people to Calyx. I expect my royalty check is in the mail, no doubt? :p
jk but sidenote, the new glowblocks are straight fire, thank you devs! @worn sky what's your role at Firehose? Which aspect of this awesome game can we thank you for?
@late rivet not now, but roughly this time next week, get back to me and I'll help you optimize your Cores for best performance as well (if you want, of course)
I have no idea what you are talking about yet :D
But sure xD
yup all good, I'm just planting the seed in your brain for next week haha
Going to give what might be a unpopular opinion here and say no. I have been playing the game since launch and at least in my save files performance by and large has remained relatively unchanged. So while I wouldn't use steam reviews as a accurate state of the game at the exact moment, performance by and large remains a big issue with the game. I have only a very modest sized factory for instance and even since last year for example the performance everytime I go back and test it, hasn't changed practically at all, aka I have a strong 13th gen processor, haven't even built that much and still can't even maintain a steady 60 fps with this game.
Hiya! To answer your question about my place on the team, I'm a member of the QA team, and although I work with our design team, everyone in QA works with everyone!
Also, to address the matter of an older factory, unfortunately, as time goes on, we recommend starting new ones, especially if you are experiencing very significant performance hits.
Although we have tried our best to preserve backward compatibility for saves throughout Early Access, including releasing hotfixes sometimes when they've been broken, there are many things that we have changed along the way. We sadly cannot guarantee that older save files will always continue working, nor that they will perform well.
There's a few ways to troubleshoot an old factory potentially being an issue, including:
- Checking your Player.log size, as a very large log may indicate a lot of errors
- As a child of the latter point, replacing machines if they're making it clear in the log that they're having issues (e.g., seeing Mining Drill errors and then replacing Mining Drills and re-saving)
- Some of the usual go-to advice, like replacing 1x1s with newer, larger Base Building pieces
If a new game doesn't resolve any severe performance issues, though, here's to hoping that a future update will!
Good points. I noticed some things did break between updates to a degree, for example my tech tree is still bugged and likely will require making a new play through to resolve, and other issues such as with belt hubs needing to be replaced as updates bugged them out, etc also and as the dev's have said they can't guarantee due to needed changes that future updates won't require making a new saves and make current saves incompatible, but im grateful for what compatibility has been maintained so far.
I'd like to add that I'm totally in love with my Techtonica factory and would be heartbroken if I had to start over (I've played thru the game a second time with a friend already) so I really appreciate the devs making the saves backwards compatible.
and doing the best they can with that. It's absolutely a balancing struggle for EA games, and I appreciate the hard effort!
I'm playing since 0.1.1 and what I'm currently doing in my save (created in January) was simply impossible back then.
(> 100k cores in one place made my pc emergency shutoff, now I have > 2 million cores in my world).
Comparing existing saves performance with new releases showed increased performance every time. There's sure still room for further improvement and bug fixes possible. It's an early access game after all.
I'd say give it a try, get yourself a savegame with a large factory and check if you're OK with performance.
I mean, to attest for my case I am running at 60 fps on high right now with frequent drops to 40, and haven t really done that much...
It's okay but a bit sad to see
Been a few months since played but see the performance is still sketchy in areas still.
Got odd performance drops in areas dropping into the teens.... Low settings, high settings doesn't make a difference.
Mind you i have a high end setup i9 13900hx w/ 4090 RTX and 32G of ram.
its been 1 year and yet the game performance is poor, for me barely it gets 20fps and that is sad, i had already gave up on the game and dont play it anymore, there is and AMD graphic bug been since the the launch of the game which is still not yet fixed, many updated passed with 0% performance uplift.
I have a laptop with the same specs. I also got very similar results depending on the save file. Hopefully performance improves in the future because right now it definitely isn't great
I have a ~2020 Lenovo Legion - [email protected], 16GB RAM, GTX 1660 Ti. I'm getting 45-50 fps in the middle of my endgame farm/processing center. It's better on my newer desktop of course, but perfectly playable on the laptop.
Found the issue... depending how long you play and if you've been playing a lot mole running... that seems to trigger a aurora around you which drastically slows things down. Saving and reload fixes.
The memory leak has definitely been a issue for several updates, your right its one of the main contributors to the bad performance depending on how long your play session goes most definitely. What I was speaking about however wasn't directly in regards to that, performance in general with this game just isn't great, the memory leak though for sure makes that issue much, much worse.
Yeah that too
