-The guided rounds would also be very effective in strafing runs against lightly armored convoys. While they would be of little use against heavily armored units such as tanks, they could allow more consistent hits from ground attack aircraft and reduce the chance of needing to make a second pass.

-With the likely introduction of small, lightly armored, relatively low speed drones, a guided low caliber main weapon would be a cost effective method of destroying them. It will also serve as a good weapon for challenging slow VTOL craft that IR weapons may be ineffective against.

Possible Users

-A smart gun could possibly equipped as a more expensive alternative to the standard main gun on some aircraft, or it could be used as a selling point on new aircraft specifically built around using one.

-It could also be used in SPAAGs and other high volume-of-fire anti air weapons, although this could be perilous to balance.

Not sure about small caliber bullets like 25mm and smaller. But for bigger it have some sense, but in this case same system will not use in every shell, maybe 1 of 3 or 4. Why? Because in real life this very expensive and have not big abilities to turn. And this will mean even in future same type of bullets will use pretty rare

I feel like the cost concern is primarily covered by this being in the future, as this sort of thing already somewhat exists in the form of the guided shells used by the Tarantula, except this would be in a smaller form with a faster fire rate. I don't know why that would be impossibly expensive, I imagine your ammo drum would only be 300-400 shots anyway in comparison to the ridiculous amount of guided shells a tarantula can carry

Dude Northrop Grumman is already making their defense commercial things for guided bullets from 30mm flak to 155mm shells

I would say make them projectiles fired from slow recharging coilguns

You get a few shots per capacitor charge, but they go faster and are somewhat guided and have bigger caliber. Just don’t miss!

It’s crazy isn’t it

They would also not be as "lob-able" as 76mm shells due to low mass so you wouldn't have the issue of someone spamming smart bullets from across the map. You would generally still need a direct line of sight on your target and be relatively close

Why not go for a tracking gun rather than tracking bullets?

with the way bullet simulation works right now, it likely wouldn't support such guidance and each round would have to be an individual munition... fun idea nonetheless
