Given how you can take extra jammer pods for the medusa, why not have smaller and lower power laser? Could have more coverage and/or auto lock onto incoming missiles. Personally, I've had (mostly skill) issues with locking onto incoming missiles with the main laser, especially if I'm in a suboptimal direction to actually use the laser. Ive had no problems defending friendly units, but really only myself, and this could mitigate that. Could be able to be mounted on different airframes, but Medusa just made the most sense for me.

and/or even battery pods with ram air turbines to help with it
I didnt even think of that, honestly might just be a better option. Increase capability of the main laser and jammers in one pod!
One ram air turbine would help so much could be the difference between getting a (severe) tan and living
believe it or not, this existed back in beta testing for the medusa. they were scrapped though.
interesting
why were they scrapped? for balance or did they just not fit?
Well... if they will drain energy storage very much, then you can add it. but as @kind path said, the idea was already there and it was removed.
I still hope that a chemical laser will be added someday.
why did you ping him 😭🙏
Yeah. Current laser use traditional type of construction to work? I think yes.
We already talk about chemical laser, to make aircraft with it, you will need build aircraft around it. And it will must be bigger than medusa, and it will have maybe very limited amount if shots, of course it will very effective. But I'm not sure devs wanna make special laser aircraft in near future. Maybe when we will have much targets(drones, smth ground weapon or etc, smth satellites) for it, they do it...
