this happens often with crude but bunker fuel and standard fuel oil is very hard to ignite unless under immense pressure and generally will not burn on its own. you can toss a lit match into a fuel tank and it won't burn. Source: I work on an oceangoing vessel with diesel engines

lol no i'd get in trouble for contaminating the fuel. my cap used to run tankers and has lots of stories though
