This started as a simple personal project to replace some sounds in N.O. that were getting a bit earsplitting after some time. Given how action oriented the game is and how often you will hear explosions and... missile alerts... I wanted a few sounds to be more gentle on the ears. Over time, the mod grew larger, and now it is replacing most sound effects. Before anyone asks, I can only replace pre-existing sounds, not add more than what the game already has.

A short list:
1: RADAR beeps/clicks modified version of F-15 and F-16 RWR, Missile Alerts shortened version of F-16 RWR. Betty no longer states "Missile Alert." Instead there will be a triple beep, followed by a subdued, steady tone denoting that you are still being tracked by the missile. It is much more forgiving on the ears than the stock alarm.

2: Weapon sounds overhauled to be more punchy, but not overbearing (hopefully).
20mm Gatling on Revoker and 20mm CIWS on the Shard share the same sound,
25mm Compass Gunpod is using audio from Lockheed 25mm gun test,
Autosentry and 20mm Gunpods are much slower ROF cannons and share the same sound

3: The Lynchpins and IRM-S1 have distinct sound

4: MMR-S1 and AGM-48 share a distinct sound

5: Explosions overhauled... both for less earsplitting effect at ground zero, and a better ambience for distance

6: Nuclear detonations have their own unique audio

I claim precisely zero of these sounds as my own, I have simply mixed, remixed, faded, shifted, organized, compiled and packaged. '80s and '90s kids SHOULD recognize some of these, especially the Jammer sound πŸ˜‰

Be sure to make backups as specified in the readme in the .zip... lest you dislike the sounds and have to use Steam's re-verification of game files to revert.

P.S. This mod does not affect anyone elses game in multi-player. It has been tested and only the person who has it installed will hear the sounds, everyone else just hears the defaults

For the most part, no. The RWR beeps/alerts are a bit of an exception, and came from a conglomeration of Falcon BMS, and a mod for the F-15 in FC3 that expanded its RWR tones. Other than that, sounds have been combined, mixed and remixed so many times it's hard to pin down everything that went into them. Sometimes I had up to 5 seperate audio wavelengths that were mixed together until I got something that I was happy with.

There is indeed a separate afterburner sound, and the actual sound file itself is VERY loud... as loud as it can get without distortion. So, the big issue is the mixing volume and muffling effect that occurs in-game depending on perspective, I'm trying to figure out a way to make it a bit louder without distortion.

New version up: Modified missile sounds for a little more punch, as well as better ambience for more distant launches. Afterburner sound added, though it is mostly only noticeable in external view. Chopper sounds less like an Apache... it's still a 4-blade rotor, going at 290rpm, but the blade width is "chonkier" on the Chicane and should by my logic sound a bit different. Turboprop sound on Cricket changed to be a bit more realistic, more turbine sound, less propeller droning. Modified .50cal sound to hopefully be less earsplitting in external view when firing 8x .50cal loadout.

I'm actually working on a 25mm gatling that is based off a ground test that lockheed did of the GAU-12 πŸ™‚ For the hellfire/rockets, right now they're very generic because there's technically only one sound used for all missile launches. I managed to make an ejection seat rocket sound that doubled pretty well for lynchpins and IRMS1's so I linked those specific weapons to that sound. Given the way Unity treats sounds and how they are faded, it works pretty well as they don't sound 1 for 1 the same.

However, again due to how Unity handles sounds, many many times I will get a sound that works great out of the program, but after compiling and trying it in-game... its either very shrill, or weak (as if all bass was removed), or muffled, or "tinny." Thus far what is in right now thankfully works pretty well. But I am always trying to make things sound better/more punchy while not being earsplitting in some way or that have a noticeable repetition in the waveform that sticks out badly after hearing it hundreds of times.

There's a low pass filter for being in cockpit as well as one that depends on distance used for explosions. It's not a unity thing.

Since I wasn't 100% sure it was a fade/filtering put in place in NO specifically, I fell back to my default position of "blame Unity" πŸ˜† The low pass filter makes sense, and works pretty well, but it is a bit more difficult to get a sound that works well both inside and outside the cockpit in the game's current configuration. Really looking forward to what you do with the sounds in NO, Squeegy!

New version up for game version 0.26.1. New Features: 3 distinct missile sounds for different missile sizes. One for Lynchpins/IRM-S1; One for MMR/AGM-48; One for all the other larger missiles. These new missile sounds mixed from several different missile test range videos. New 25mm gatling sound from a Lockheed F-35 gun test video. Slightly lowered volume of the triple-beep of the missile launch alert. New missile sound possible due to over-writing a line betty will say on rare occasion... I doubt anyone will miss it.

They are slightly quieter, but they sound less "ear-bangy" because there is a briefer "pop" and a more gradual, subtle fade out with no odd echoing or reverb that gets repetitive once you hear it alot

Thanks for letting me know about that @unkempt gorge, it was something I tested quite a while ago on just the Chicane to see the viability of using the flare sound as a missile sound also. Obviously it had poor results, but I forgot to change it back to the proper flare sound

Strange, I don't even hear the Chicane's rotor at all... in external view it should be noticeably louder than the turbines. In addition, when the lynchpins impact, I can hear the "dust settling" sound that plays in addition to the impact explosion. Perhaps I can disable it as it is barely noticeable. Maybe that will take a bit of a load off of the sound engine

New version will likely be up later today pending testing... most sound files that play in non-looping, rapid succession... like explosions, missiles, Chicane and IFV cannon, and 57mm cannon sounds will be getting shortened. Some will be shorter than stock length, particularly the missile explosion sounds. This will in theory help to reduce the amount of instances where, in a very busy battlespace, audio will start to cut out due to too many sounds being played concurrently.

In addition to the audio length "refactor," some new or modified sounds will be in. Chicane cannon being refined, rocket impact on terrain also should have a proper sound.

New version up... hotfixed so that the rockets explosion/impact sounds are audible at ranges up to 5000m, this up from the original 1000m which made them incredibly faint at all but point-blank range.

This will likely be the last version released for quite some time, unless bug reports roll in and I need to fix something. Most likely, future versions will come after the new update releases with the Medusa support aircraft.

Definitely not... with the amount of times you'd hear this in a single match, I won't be adding a long dissertation by betty for every missile launch. The terrain warning (typically manually silenced by pilots flying NOE) and shoot cue (or a sidewinder growl or lock tone) is not currently possible as it would require new code from the devs.

The old version of the mod was completely incompatible with the newest version of Nuclear Option, and would require some work to regain compatibility while also utilizing some of the newly implemented functionality. Development of the mod is currently paused for two main reasons:
1st: the official audio overhaul that Shockfront is implementing into the game is still a work in-progress and I'd prefer to wait to continue development until it is more finalized.
2nd: Focused on other, more pressing, IRL things at the moment.
All said, I may simplify the mod and continue development in the future.
