B3 is the closest thing to an EX DP in Tekken and F3 is the best whiff punish move in the game

there are no rules I've discovered at all about anything

spins are mids except when they're lows, or highs

throw breaks are horrible for me to learn because I can't seem to successfully break throws I know the break for and am mashing it out for in advance

kicks are slow except when they're not, and they're minus except when they're not, and big committal attacks are minus except when they're not, and they don't have followups except when they do

nothing is true about this game

in guilty gear I can go "block low, react to overheads, very few characters have fast overheads, lows are faster than overheads generally"

tekken as far as I can tell doesn't have a single rule that's consistent about anything other than "armored moves lose to lows, except when they're faster than the low or a heat smash"

"heat smashes are mids, except when they're high or low"

the only rule I can find at all is "jabs are 10 frames"

(except when they're not)

(because you're playing xiaoyu or yoshi)

fast moves are plus except they're not except they chain into things except they don't and heavy moves are linear except they're not and you can sidestep them except you can't and on and on

I have never in my life look at a move and been able to tell if it was a mid or not in this game it's crazy

there are attacks that hit higher than jabs, which are high, that are mid

I feel like I'm getting quizzed on a 400 episode anime

no wonder so many people don't even bother to try to learn to defend how are you supposed to keep the moves in mind from someone you fight once in a huge cast between ranked matches

it took me a year to learn strive well enough that I know what most of the cast wants to do and how they do it, and if I react wrong that's one thing but I at least know what the right thing was after the fact

tekken is like. five times as much going on per character, and a giant cast. my god

I rolled up to play rock paper scissors and people whipped out 3rd edition DND

it's crazy

"I'm playing feng so I have a mid string that's safe on block but you can sidestep it unless I delay it which I can do on every hit by a lot" uh ok

"I'm playing eddie and I have a special gauge that fills when I hit you with a high-low-mid mixup that automatically completes if I mash one button, god help you if I know how to do more than that" uh

"I'm playing a mishima which means I am blessed with excellent engage buttons and also tons of high-execution moves and combos, if you play one of this series' equivalents to shotos and you can't perfectly do an EWGF every time why did you pick them at all" okay so-

"I'm playing Steve, he has no kicks!" so he has fewer moves or- "he has five stances! Each with their own movesets!"

it feels like it never ends

the only thing I've learned that seems to be consistent is if you see someone start to do a sweep you can hopkick to punish them. which it feels to me like you should just both miss each other but holy shit an actual consistent interaction I'll take it

even the things I've found people talking about in videos as consistent rules. aren't.

"plus moves that come out fast are highs so you can duck them" "cool!" "Except sometimes they're mids, and there are attacks that connect higher than highs that count as mids, so I hope you like memorizing every move in the game"

I'm out here like "so maybe all cartwheel kicks are mids, because they beat lows?" and then they're not ALL that, no no. Lows are slow as a rule but god help you if you try to fuzzy block by just crouching shortly after an attack comes out you WILL eat a mid that WILL be half your healthbar.

parries are useless except when they're not and the fact that I have looked at parry descriptions and they say the most nonsense shit

reina has one that parries highs. that's reasonable. it only works during heat and costs a ton of gauge. that's less cool.

every single defense guide is like "just know the strings and defend them" and every offense guide is like "here's how you start your offense with a +2 mid that has seven followups, three of which launch on counterhit"
