how are they and do they need to be painted

But they have a lot of small pieces most of the time

For painting, well

Primer or airbrush

At best plastic slightly tinted but it's gray most of the time

In theory workflow with that is

Prime it, apply base coat, then varnish

Then do panel washes with enamel washes

And then some weathering

I don't recommend this kit, it was a pain to work with. Small fiddly parts are one - and alright, it was cheap - but instruction is at times simply unclear.

def recommend it only if you're experienced, as then I assume you'd like it better

and now I'm back to reminding myself why I don't like scale modeling and prefer painting minis
