Well, what makes you want to pull for all these characters? What's your current goal when it comes to the game?

For example, my current goal is to 36 Star the Abyss and be able to do so consistently. I've only recently gotten to be able to hit 35 stars semi-consistently, so I'm well on my way. After that, I'll just be focusing on getting new characters I like to build teams with/around and building those teams so I'm able to have more variety when it comes to clearing endgame content.

I think I want to just treat the game as a character collector gacha first and foremost

but the rerun frequency just gives me anxiety

and I doubt we can bank on it getting noticeably better anytime soon

I think time, both gametime and real life days, that you have to invest into getting characters you want while there are also new characters coming out every patch what makes it disheartening for me as a new player

the way that story assumes you have already did the previous regions and their AQs, the way the events' characters already assume and act like you already did their regions AQ despite you never saw them before makes me think that devs see the new player experience as an afterthought in this phase of its lifespan

it feels like the only way to enjoy the game with my goals is that you have to give up on "catching up" and make peace with the fact that you're going to only have an handful of limited characters you wanted

I mean, yeah, that's exactly it. Even though I only joined recently, I had to skip out on certain characters or choose between two of them because of how the gacha system works. For example, I had to choose between Navia, Nilou and Yelan in 4.8. While I ultimately ended up going with Navia, I do wonder how different things would be if I went with either of the other two.

I think it's best to just play at your own pace and enjoy the game to the best of your ability with what it gives you. If you don't like that, then I'd put into question why you're even playing the game. That's the main reason I asked you what your goals were, because they seemed very different from the usual cases.

If you want to play Genshin as a character collector, then more power to ya, but you'll need to take time to plan things out as best you can and accept the fact that it'll take a long, long time to get all the characters you may want.

Yeah that’s usually how it is, looking at my account I’ve been playing genshin since Jan 2021 and have alot of characters I like it took a very long time so as a new player coming in seeing all these characters it definitely makes you feel fomo so a lot of times you have to make a compromise

While it is theoretically a good model, you have to consider the fact that at least 70% of the games players are F2P casuals who just play for the story and exploration. It would ultimately be a loss in money for HoYo, as the game wouldn't have the majority of the playerbase it does today. The fact the games Free to Play is one of the main reasons it's so popular.

I think it also worth mentioning that Genshin was designed for a Eastern market(including SEA) first and foremost, so its monetized like a lot of other Eastern games that games that came before it

and a lot of us, including me haven't really gotten used to this model all that much, we're used to buying a game at full price and getting everything(or mostly everything if you play a ubisoft game or something) so I think that's why I feel weirded out by the monetization model a bit

You pay to play the game for longer, you pay to progress faster/easier.
I get where you're coming from though, it does take a bit to get used to.

afaik a lot of gacha games are(or historically were) way more popular in a lot of eastern countries, there is still some negative sentiment against this genre in general in English speaking social media

and as you know ton of older gachas came out 1-2 years later after they were out in their home countries, so I think its sort of reasonable to claim they're ever so slightly more niche here

I will admit though, it's very likely that I'm kinda jaded on this because I've been playing Gacha games since mid-2020 and mobile games for a good few years prior to that.
It also doesn't help that I'm actually not much of a fan of the 'big DLC release' model since I'm the sort of person that, once I move on from a game and complete everything there is in the base version, it's kinda difficult for me to go back without being heavily invested in that game.

So ultimately I'm not the best person to talk to about the 'new gacha game player' experience

It would really have to be mmo-like because of how live service it is, and frankly that would require a massive change in how the game is at its core beyond just storefronts and such. And establishing a new game with that model seems pretty impossible, the only games that still survive on it are WoW and FF14, which have legacy player bases, and other mmos have also adopted f2p models.

Fundamentally I think the majority of people prefer predatory micro transactions and whale hunting to keep a live service game running than the idea of paying a few quid a month for a game they put hundreds of hours in. A bit sad, but how things are for now
