It lost the aerial stuff true, but it became very fun in a similar "constant tomfoolery" way. It's really easy to get essences or whatever buff, then you can do a special move once you have all three to do a bunch of damage all at once, and the attack in and of itself can even completely replenish all of your essences if you time/do it right
Also almost all standard attacks in focus mode send out your kinsect alongside the actual attack

I didn't find it, but they do allow you to do the IG focus attack both in the air and on the ground, and it acts as a way to both give you essence for breaking wounds while also kinda bouncing you
