I’ve been coming back slowly ever since that patch they did that fixed the issues with season 2

Movement is getting nicer and the more niche/hard stuff like 1+4 electric and side step electric I’m getting down some more

1+4 is her little duck move that goes into her ws moves

But it can be canceled into wave dash for an instant electric

Which the window at least to me feels tighter than doing an electric normally

A foul on Sugar?

Some people don't realise that Tekken 8 average damage is lower than Tekken 5 and about the same as Tekken 6 and 7.

Got into an argument about it

Fahk doing 90 damage is nowhere near as unhealthy as like tag2 Bruce damage, Tekken 4, 5 or 6 Steve damage, Tekken 1, 2 or 3 damage in general.

Some people are way too focused on like Tekken 7 Fahk to even realise that this is a brand new Fahk

People need to realise that this is a really good reimagining of T7 Fahk

So many people are going "resource character into 50/50 stance" without really thinking about how his resource interacts with his kit

His unblockable is now potential damage rather than guaranteed like in 7 (no more unblockable into d4), his resource enables the unblockables and rage drive, so he keeps iconic parts of his movekit without feeling unfair

It's really well made imo

Also how many DLC actually does stance into 50/50?

Like as a core aspect

So for example, Anna’s 50/50 is way stronger when she’s crouching than any of her stances

So Lidia, Clive, Heihachi after his heat smash

From what I've seen there is no defensive option that only beats one choice he can make

The one thing I'm curious about and should lab later is if anyone has too short a jab range to stuff the unblockable but I imagine they tested that, surely?

Who has the shortest jab range? Xiaoyu? Hwoarang?

Jab beats throw and unblockable

Duck beats throw and sweep

Stand block beats both mids

Backdash beats throw and technically both mids

Sidestep only loses to sweep and throw if your sidestep is good, from what I've been able to tell, but it always seems to beat unblockable and mid kick no matter what

This is a remarkably well rounded mix

And most importantly it doesn't lead to 15 seconds of getting juggled. You find out real fast if you fucked up and the match continues.

I really love the risk reward on his throw being altered by throw giving him back install

Having not played 7 it legit seems to me like fahk install is like blazblue cf Overdrive where you spend a resource to briefly become the most op busted version of your character and I think that's incredibly cool

Like every rama stance followup has a 3/2 chance of success and I think that's remarkably fair given he has to get into the position to begin with and it happens from his offense

And also the cutscene GUARANTEES you have time to select your choice on defense, you aren't gonna tell me he talked shit and walked at you and you didn't have time to think about what you want to do when the animation ends

It's not a mechanic I would want to be on every single character but it is really cool as his thing y'know?

But that's the beauty of Tekken 8 especially. You really don't need to know the matchup if you can just knowledge check your opponent first and constantly with plus frames galore.

And that works for and with every character. All the TK Xiaoyu's and Alisa's with 40 defense got those ranks by bum rushing the opponent but they absolutely crumble if you know the matchup

I use ff2 out of wave dash because I usually get pressed on trying to go into stance with anything else

And then I just kinda looped mix

I was also trying to just poke a bit more and rack up damage with any lows I could sneak in then blow them up with a fat mid

I don’t think I did that in the Steve game tho

But that was my plan for the ranked session just actually playing the game

The S2 buffs were nice and a lot of the stances flow into each other now but I do wish there were even more like faster ways to get into stance that don’t get you blown up if you try to do them

Like Unsoku D4 would be a great low into sentai stance transition if this was like Tekken 7 where I could back off to get the space to use it so it’s not as risky but in Tekken 8 everyone’s just in your face and it’s hard to just use slower moves sometimes without like jab checking your opponent to stop pressing first

But idk maybe I don’t play Tekken enough

God the amount of times in that ranked session I hit people with my counter hit moves on Reina because they were just slamming their heads on the controller is insane I got like so much damage off that and they never learned 😭😭

Zafina has 3 unique stances: Scarecrow, Tarrantula and Mantis that a lot of her strings naturally go into. Scarecrow has stuff I've seen used a lot but otherwise idk how important the other two are

Lee’s stance allows for sidestepping and can be cancelled into mist step

Lars cannot move whatsoever during his stance except for going into different stances

Also technically, Yoshimitsu would be S4

He has a stance where he can block, has access to all universal movement options and such and his unique movement options such as spin

But it gives him a very different moveset with different properties so it's still a stance

Also non of his stances besides bad breath are actually stationary

Alisa also follows this exception as she has a stance where she has all universal movement options besides running or jumping and can block

BIG LIST OF LEROY QUESTIONS:

0: I have added your prior post on parries, which I am replying to with this list for clarity, to my notes file at the very top. Parries are what got me wanting to play this character!

1: The best feeling I've ever had in tekken, arguably, was an Asuka VS Steve match where I parried the steve for his entire healthbar and did not otherwise hit him. Is it too greedy to want to structure my entire gameplan around essentially irritating my opponent into pressing so I can parry them so I can force them to get mad because they're killing themself, repeat? Does Leroy require you know how to run stagger/frame trap pressure?

2: My impression is that Leroy doesn't seem to care too much about using throws beyond purely representing them as an option for mental stack purposes, am I correct on this?

3: How should I be viewing cane? Is it worth spending time early on practicing combos off a once-per-match tool or is it better viewed as a 'here's a strong normal you can end a match with but don't treat it like a pillar of your gameplan because it ain't' sort of situation?

4: Is there a rule of thumb to knowing which parry to go for? I'm assuming it's not as simple as just trying to use b2 for anything that's not a low, and raw entering hermit for anything that is a low, right?

5: Leroy seems to have, as his core weaknesses, a mild vulnerability to throws (since you can't tech a throw if parrying at the time), not great range or mobility (not awful, but not that good) and I haven't found an especially good low to mix people with yet. In exchange, it seems like he gets to rob you on your offense in situations almost nobody else can, and can break offensive strings that nothing but like, asuka/jun punch sabaki can (of what I've seen) otherwise. He seems to be a beast at point blank, with his chief difficulty being against characters that can keep him away from point blank. Am I right on this?

6: How do I evaluate which of his APPARENTLY VERY MANY strings is the best in a given situation? Is there some kind of general throughline? X string is better at close range, Y string is better at longer range, something like that?

7: What is his fastest parry to start up, for when i.e. I'm fighting yet another steve who thinks he can infinitely jab me for free?

8: The only b2 followup I've found so far is 1+2, am I correct that that's the way to go?

9: 1+2 does way more chip on block in heat mode... but it's still very bad on block if you finish out the 1+2 1+2 1+2 string. So am I correct that intentionally making use of that chip is not really a strategy worth planning for, and the chip should more be treated as a consolation prize if you mistime the attack?

10: I can't tell if I'm just getting the timing wrong or not, but is it not possible to delay the 1+2 1+2 string's second input to force a frame trap on someone panic-mashing? I'm not operating at 100% but I can't get a kazuya dummy to try to jab me on it and get counterhit.

11: What's my best keep-out tool for people who are married to the concept of trying to ff2 at me at all times, at all ranges?

12: What's my best option for hitting people OTG who refuse to stand up?

13: What's the oki Leroy runs like?

I'm gonna answer these questions in waves lol. At work and have some free time, but not that much lol.

1. Leroy's greatest strength is taking away your opponents ability to autopilot via parries or the threat of parries. Structure your defensive gameplan around the threat of a Larry. Let them run a flowchart on you, then when you identify it, parry between it. High chance your opponents muscle memory betrays them to your benefit.

2. Leroy does have a generic throw game but it's still his fastest tracking option. (Off topic but make F2 track again) in S2 Leroy can also use all his UF input moves in Hermit including the universal 1+2 throw. It catches almost everyone once. Generic 1+3 throw causes a floor explosion/break for a nice damaging combo. And 2+4 is a side switch even if its teched

3. CaNe Op PlEaSe NeRf! Keep it in the back pocket unless you really want to close out a round. Or if a B3 lands.
   Practice a df2 1+2 launcher and apply it to the mid cane on hit. Whichis also safe on block. Low cane is an instant tornado and like -12 iirc.

TOTALLY feel you, I neither need nor expect rapid answers, this is mostly for feeling out where the gaps in my knowledge are.

I've found that a decent "I don't know what else to do but this is consistent" string off a launch or crumple is either f3+4, uf3+4 ~ 1+2, or just straight uf3+4 ~ 1+2 if the launch isn't especially high.

My at this exact moment go-to "I blocked your snake edge, now PERISH" response is fc df4, 1 (launch) f3+4, uf3+4 ~1+2 which is 60 damage. Not an insane amount, but given my "best" before was the generic d4 leg swipe, a big improvement!

Happy to hear if this is a terrible habit and I'd be much better off practicing something radically different; from what I've seen, uf3+4 ~ 1+2 is extremely common as an ender, so worth practicing that input for now while I get neutral down

If you block a snake edge or a stagger low, use Wr2 for an instantly better combo.

And Leroy's best wall ender is either 1+2 string, Hermit F4 (height dependent) or Jab into F3 1+2,4 (height dependent too)

Steve's love backdashing so it isn't a Leroy specific problem but he doesn't have many long range moves. Ff2,2 F4,4 and Uf3+4, 1+2 are your best chances of catching a backdash

It depends on if the string you parry is natural or not. A Mishima 112? You'll get hit trying to punish after parrying one of the jabs.

After a B2 parry you can heat burst, and its even possible to parry, then DF2 1+2 launch them if the move has high recovery

Kinda like how Jin can Can Can you after he parries an attack

I checked my stats and have slightly over 3000 wins with Leroy in S1 and 2 of Tekken 8 combined. (Not doing the match to figure out how many total matches played.)

In over 3000 matches I have never hit an opponent with any of these Hermit moves if they sidewalked and ended up behind me.

So its non impactful, at least imo

Now all of Leroy's machine gun punches that realign for absolutely no reason....

It's called muscle memory and having it for 300 different strings which all of them have sometimes as much as three consecutive inputs is not easy to train

I have (through help from many people especially @cloud yoke ) finally internalized what the approach I need to view combos as is

I have been told this over and over by now but it's only now that I finally am like INTERNALIZING what the process is

1: Learn what starts a combo (generally a launcher)
2: Learn pieces that can chain together to fill a combo
3: Learn ways to end combos, moves where you know that by using them you are ending the combo. Generally it seems there are trade offs based on what you choose for each step of this

With Tekken you have the additional "find a tornado to continue it further"

So all combo structure is

Starter -> filler -> tornado -> filler -> ender

I was futzing around with local friend and discovered that I actually really love how it feels to execute on combos with Jun and the difference between doing so with her and xiaoyu seems to be spacing is a lot more forgiving with Jun

Which makes sense; having more range will do that

It's a great game, super fun to mash and technical if you want to really learn
I see the problems with the game and the balancing and ranked really shows off those problems when you see REALLY scrubby opponents getting REAL high ranks and beating you
But if you're looking to play with a friend or here on Discord, it's EXTREMELY fun

I haven't played anyone besides my gf and close friends in a while and it's REALLY fucking fun
But doing ranked will eat your mental health.

after putting a while into tekken 8 i honestly think namco should remove heat

the idea is cool but in practice it's a crutch alot of people use in the game and it's discouraging for people who want to rely on skill and knowledge of the game. Atleast nerf the damage or something

A lot of my issues with T8 would be solved if you had to earn Heat like a super meter.

And if you could only use Heat smash or rage once per round like T7 had it with Rage Arts and Rage Drive

Keep the auto Heat engagers as is though

Also I'd remove some Heat specific properties on throws.

Off the top of my head King doesn't need homing Heat throws and drag doesn't need an untechable tackle in Heat only

I think my only real complaint with tekken 8 at this point is this:

heat smash should universally be -10 on block and never be able to set up an advantageous situation on block

so no stance mix off it etc.

like can we shake hands on

the nerf to make rage art universally -18 and make asuka's full charged -13 was a good one even if I miss cheesing people

but I am tired of fighting steve players in ranked who will use heat smash as a way to guarantee a 50/50 because that shit is hard af to avoid if they're anywhere near you, and steve is not the easiest character in the world to keep away from you

it does not feel good to know upwards of 5 seconds in advance exactly what my opponent will do and be unable to prevent it

I personally feel like if they're making characters for whom Heat is a central part of their gameplan, then it should be something you both have to earn and can earn. It should be ABA install and they should be tuned accordingly

who is having fun when Lidia burns through heat and didn't kill you doing so?

is it fun to have 30% health against a character who has blown most of her best stuff already? is it fun to burn out your best options and have to play with a kit that's kind of lacking compared to much of the cast because you activated an on-screen countdown timer for how long you get to go ham?

literally the reason I bounced off lidia was I realized just how much of her is Heat and I hate how that feels
