Lots of factors- if they're on t5 or better cars, it helps. If they can camp in main alliance and get the speed boosts for territory and tech etc it helps.

if you religiously send out gatherers, you probably don't need more than 3.
My issue is i don't send them out all the time

i have 9 farms, 3 of them with t5 rest now t4 and i usually run out of speeds or troops before rss.
But im not a whaley kraken, i have less capability
