If a skill says “when only leading X troop type, gain Y” then it’s a toggle status you get at the beginning of the fight that remains for the whole combat.

However, if it’s one of those that says “when only leading X troop type **have a chance to gain Y ** then anytime after those other troop types die you can gain that bonus effect on top of the mixed troop type bonus.

So for example, you could start with Victor mixed troop garrison with 159.9k inf troops and a single rider troop and gain 20% atk, but 5 seconds into the fight you could be triggering the passive in the infantry tree that says “When only leading infantry troop type, have 10% chance to gain 20% damage reduction for 2 seconds”

Generally, as a new player, i still always recommend focusing on 1 troop type until you unlock t6 troops. It's a long journey, and that's the most efficient way.
once you decide troop type, it's easier to point out optimal hero pairings.
Definitely don't waste anything on Nora, you will regret it
