There's more incentive to actually join and fight in large alliances now when you can show up win or lose and walk away with the best/rarest rewards in the game now

It's definitely possible. You could build algorithms to find teams based on parameters other than total might, use things that pick out players hiding among babies for easy/cheap rewards.
If you're a 250M white part level 10+ t3 vehicles sort of player, your whole alliance gets to go fight people with that especially if they're mostly bots and farms.

The problem is this game isn't about integrity or fairness. It's about catering to those God complexes to keep the gravy train flowing.

It's a question of will, not possibility

You cannot have a fair matchmaking because all alliances are not made equal. Instead focus on how you structure your alliance, garrison/rally players, having active fighters, having field control and plan on fights with markers. You will do well most of the time against others on your level.
