I used to think so as well.

But I believe that it actually does recognize total might, after seeing how GW placed everyone into a rank between 1-2000 based on total alliance might. And I dont believe they are actually calculating arm might in the bag either. But i think a more important variable is alliance average, although they weigh a heavier account more than they do a small account. So its definitely not a perfect average. This is all speculation though based on our experience matching.

Based on any pvp event, it's clear to me they're using a proxy for total might. They might as well just be using total might.
This is kind of 2 seperate issues though- one is the matchmaking system generally, and 2 is if and how equipping armaments is taken into account.
There's a statement in the vehicle workshop that explains how they basically note your highest historical might for those, so dismantling devices drops your might, but won't change your pvp rating.

Also. Whales want to kill fast and a lot of enemies.
Ranged do the highest damage so its good for whales.
Another thing to note is that whales armaments are better with stats that increase your damage instead of defense.
Since whales can usually heal a lot or as much as they want. They dont care about their hospital, but having more damage allows them to take enemies out faster from war.

Most heroes only buff one type. So mixing the troops inside your squad makes it weaker.
If you use infantry heroes, you want to only put infantry in that squad.

Leader heroes are for mixed troops
