#The game won't start. At all. Please help

Hi there, when I try to start the game (through file or through steam) Steam says it's running, and eventually it's not. I've tried getting help from ChatGPT, which took me on an unusual trip that ultimately got me nowhere.

I think I'm missing some dependencies, but I'm not sure how I can get it to trigger that first time launch dependency installation. I accidentally corrupted an install before installing this game, and it caused anything on steam to fail when trying to start things. (and yes I've tried re-installing but it doesn't trigger the first-launch dependency install)

GPU-1: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU

What happened was: I wanted to install HLB, and I accidentally started installation of HLD. Then I uninstalled HLD while it was installing. After that, nothing would work. Eventually I rebooted and when Steam opened, it was installing HLD again. Then I proceeded to wait and uninstall HLD when it was done installing, which fixed that nothing at all would start.

The only thing left is that HLB won't start. I noticed that during dependency installation of HLB, it took ages and then ended with "corrupt file signature", which leads me to believe that Steam didn't handle the dependency installation. If that isn't the issue, I have no clue what else it could be

  • I also tried disabling cloud saves and starting the game in offline mode, despite that the issue there involved that the game actually started up. It changed nothing
#

And just to clarify. The game never starts up. There are no crashes. No crash reports can be found

Have you tried deleting all the files for hld and hlb on your pc after uninstalling?

I have for HLB, but didn't consider HLD. Where would other HLD files be installed? (like how Breaker exists in appdata>local)

#

Would be like prog86x>steam>steamapps>common

remote quiver
#

Oh there are no remaining HLD files in steam folders

faint hatch
#

Other than that I’d try verifying the files in steam

remote quiver
#

Have done that

Sorry just trying to help but I’m not sure what’s up past that. Maybe edit your post to include your pc hardware

I've installed on 3 different drives across 2 different Harddrives. A HDD and an NVME

But I don’t think it’s related to that

Yes

What happens when you try to start it up

Absolutely nothing. Steam says "launching" followed by "running" and then eventually it just stops saying "running"
I can't find the game in Task Manager, just my system taking up the entire disk's activity gauge until Steam doesn't say "running" anymore

#

Oh okay I did another restart of my pc and when I tried booting up the game, it came up with

#

again, verifying does nothing

#

I have also attempted this. Gonna do it again though

#

Nope

Added specs at the top

sighs while it seems some games run, not all of them do after all

#

I'm gonna go depression nap. This is most likely not an issue with this game after all. God why did this just happen all of a sudden

#

omg

#

one sec

#

Dude. I fixed it. What. This is so weird

#

I don't know how, but I had a running, functional Steam on my computer. But it didn't show up in installed programs.

I think Steam glitched out when I played on another friend's account these last few days until I got HLB.

I just installed Steam on top of the previous Steam installation (as a test) and now it all works

I'm not sure which dependencies you're referring to but I found this
Someone said:
If Steam no longer loads your game, try re-installing the "Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables" (which contain VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, etc). Click here to get them from the Microsoft website. These files are needed for many games, but may have gotten corrupted or accidentally uninstalled.

On the download page, scroll down a little and you will see a table with 3 download links. Install both the x86 and x64 versions (vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe). Some games require one or the other, so install both.

Steam is flaky and doesn't seem to re-install these if you delete and reinstall your game, so it leaves you wondering WTF is going on.

If that doesn't solve your problem, use Steam to locate the installation folder for your game, and try running the game directly from its folder. If an error message pops up about missing files, then do a web search for the error and see where that gets you.

Otherwise VC 2022 Redist maybe? https://steamdb.info/app/1534840/depots/

Thank you for the answers! Sorry for dumping this on you guys. I think I found a bug where switching accounts on steam (using the multi-account system) can lead to a broken Steam installation
