Version: 0.5.1c.108329

Session time: Maybe 15 minutes in the first section, then rebooted specifically for the second section.

This bug is pretty interesting in my opinion. Upon loading in to the map, you don't take any damage or anything from falling into water. Which seems to be the intended behavior.

However, if you have a weapon that has an ailment (showcased bleed and hack in the video) and attack, there's some kind of flag that's set that inflicts you with that ailment upon respawning after drowning. I tested it several times in the video, and it was fairly predictable.

This flag does clear upon extraction or death, but not from drowning itself.

Additionally, if you attack with an ailment weapon then switch to a weapon without an ailment, attack with that, and then drown, you won't get the ailment of the first weapon.

Lastly, it seems that being respawned after drowning on the extraction pad at the same time as the barrier goes up causes you to not be inflicted with the ailment. As for why this is, I'm unsure. But I thought it was interesting and worth including.

Interesting… I heard in another thread that fall damage is calculated based on the player’s weapon damage — so falling with a weapon that inflicts DOT will inflict that DOT on the player

… Which makes me think that drowning in water is registered as falling? Might help the devs figure out what’s going on with that or how to fix it

Oh it could be. I didn't know that, thanks for your input!

After some more testing, I have confirmed that it's tied to the weapon you currently have equipped. If you switch to one that has no ailment effect, regardless of whether you attack, you won't get the ailment.

Continuation of the previous video. Tested falling into water without attacking with the changed (no ailment) weapon.

The ailment from the previous weapon does not affect you regardless of whether you swung or not prior to drowning.

# elder owl It’s such a strange thing though. Doesnt make sense to do this as the calculatio...

Yeah… the only thing I can really think of for as to why this would be the dev decision is if damage otherwise is coded so that it has to be tied to a definite entity outside of the player. If there is no enemy or defined entity to deal damage then maybe the engine doesn’t account really for like… environmental damage in that way…? That’s my best guess

Definitely a weird way to code fall damage as far as dev goes. But then again, I’ve played better funded games that are programmed even worse than that (looking at you, FFXIV ARR).
