I keep getting this error.
I installed the base game in a custom folder, not the default battle.net launcher path.
I've gone into the game, online, and closed everything. Restarted, etc.
Do I need to reinstall base game at the default location?

Idk, but I moved my files to default path, and it worked...

@languid badger and others that may read this, you definitely don't have to install to the default directory that Bnet gives you. I have the Bnet launcher installed in my main drive, the game itself installed to a separate drive, and D2RLaunch running from the main drive and it's all fine.
A couple things you can try:
Open Bnet launcher and try the repair option for the existing install of D2R.
Leave D2R installed as it is, but reinstall Bnet launcher so it rescans for D2R install location.
Btw, this is all assuming your copy is legit. If you have a pirated version, I don't believe it's going to work (hopefully I'm wrong about that part)
