Hi Community.

Is there a page somewhere that lists all the features supported/unsupported in the self hosted version??

A clear guide on the features/capabilities available in self hosted vs the cloud would really help our team in choosing Novu as our notifications engine.

Thanks.

Right now, the novu code first framework is not supported on the self-hosted model. I'm hoping that changes in the next release though

Hi @misty hollow I haven't seen the code first framework. What is its utility?

misty hollow

it's the new v2 for novu

@misty hollow when you say its the new v2. Do you mean the version available on self-host is not v2?

<@&986960430528331776> might be able to chime in on when v2 will be available

Thanks allot @misty hollow this clears up my original confusion. I think this should be better documented, but pretty sure this will be updated soon.

Thanks allot.

[SOLVED] List of features supported in self hosted

Hey @atomic hill and @misty hollow

Self-hosted vs commercial plan differentiation is something we're actively working on. Currently we're in the middle or inter-team deliberation on this very topic. However, I can tell you that we'll have an open core with some features on top of it in our commercial plans. Our underlying philosophy is that if you want complete control over your systems and are comfortable with managing your own infra, you should use the self-hosted option. Following is a list of features that the open source version will miss out on. Do note that it is neither a definitive list and nor immutable and can change as a result of our deliberation:

  • RBAC (role based access control)
  • SSO (single sign-on)
  • Audit logging
  • Dedicated support and SLAs

And thank you for bringing this up. I'll open an issue in our docs to add it once it becomes formal! 🙏

I'd just like to give some feedback re: not including SSO in the self-hosted solution. I understand the business desire to keep SSO in a paid plan (and usually an "enterprise" plan), but holding back a basic security feature hurts us, the smallest companies the most. We have the least resources to help manage individual user accounts and the associated support costs, and the least amount of resources for security. SSO provides superior security to this group of smaller entities that are likely the most vulnerable.

In short, please consider allowing SSO in self-hosted.

Hi Tomi.

I hear you here. The challenge is that we built this with a non-open source third party SaaS-offering that requires licensing, and thus we cannot include it in the free version.

Some aspects of SSO are available in our generous free tier, though.
