My only commentary is that I did also notice the change of the art direction, particularly with the newer releases of characters.

Like more emphasis is put on... I wouldn't say simplicity, thats like a by-product imo but more so clarity. That is a strength in its own right, but to some others it can come off as a downgrade.

Looking at M.Suzumi sprite vs base version for example, you can note the change in art direction, not to say anything of the fact that the artist for M.Suzumi isnt the same one that drew the base version. Base is actually more detailed in many places, while the mahou alt goes for the "minimum essence of Suzumi the character" - someone looking at her and would be like yea that's Suzumi alright. And then its simpler clothing (folds), hair with gradients on ends, etc... bigger eyes too. Overall feel is "cuter".

I can only say that I slightly prefer the cuter look of the new sprite more, but thats it for my own commentary. I can express preference for one over the other, without saying much about the objectivity of one being better than the other. I can note differences. And to me its... I said sanitised earlier but even that feels like an oversimplification. Its only part of it. Sorry for ramble.

Even if gacha games existed for aeons, BA is its own thing so people can have a common idea on what they want (cute), but then overtime they get more into their groove. Possibly faster. "better" in their own ways. And that may not necessitates details. I feel like that should be something to keep in mind : details =/= good art (direction).
