This shit happens when people go to certain sketchy websites. While there they will be hit with a certain attack called "JavaScript PowerShell insertion malware"

I know because I almost got hit with one such attack myself. Almost lost my Discord and probably would have been forced to reset and reinstall my Windows.

The playbook is simple:
There will be a popup to another site, or from WITHIN the site itself, there will be a CAPTCHA request. The request doesn't ask you to solve a slide puzzle or just click "I am not a bot" or click on images of stairs, motorcycles, etc...

What it actually asks you to do is to press a certain keyboard combo to open up Windows Run. (Iirc its Win + S, I think)
And paste a certain command.
But WAIT! What is there to paste?

The JavaScript script on the sketchy sites already inserted the Powershell script into your clipboard. Its only active for the instance that the fake CAPTCHA site is active. You press ENTER after pasting and it basically downloads a secondary payload on a non-crawlable website usually containing a txt file, then executes it immediately without actually saving it to disk. Thats why most malware scans wont find it because the malware was executed in a different pipeline (PowerShell) , and not actually downloaded to a physical location on your computer like a exe file. If executed, you likely lose access to your Discord, data scraped and the classic crypto spam ensues

I know this because I did a good read up after being attacked by such an attack. Look up "PowerShell JavaScript attack" to read more.

Its social engineering more so than genius brute force hacking. Not visiting 🏴‍☠️ sites and/or disabling JavaScript essentially renders this attack ineffective. Though you will still be vulnerable to other attacks. Now you know how people lose control of their Discord.
