#VPN Connection Speed test slow
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
When a VPN says it is connecting to the fastest server, it usually means the server with the lowest latency or least load at that moment, not the one that guarantees the highest possible download and upload speeds. Some speed loss is expected with any VPN because traffic is being encrypted and routed through an additional server. However, a consistent drop of 10 percent or more can depend on factors like server distance, server congestion, the encryption protocol being used, or throttling by the ISP when VPN traffic is detected. Testing different server locations, protocols, and running tests at different times can help determine whether the slowdown is normal or if the VPN configuration is the cause.
I knew that VPNs do slow down connections down, but they should not cause a 50% or 80% decrease in speed. Apparently the latency was at 700 to 800 ms during the first attempt at connecting to the VPN. It has improved since then. I was just shocked that my 400 Mbps speed was reduced to 10 to 20 Mbps. Now the latency is around 100ms.
Yeah, that shouldn’t be happening.
Now that it's disconnected and re-connected to a different server, things greatly improved.
Possible location issue?
possible and it may simply be an issue on my ISPs end of things.
Hopefully things get better for us.
It’s very possible it’s ISP related or even a degraded server node
After further testing on various networks on several devices and at various times, the VPN seems to fluctuate between 50% to 80% slower connection speed than without the VPN. Which is causing some of my apps to timeout. The cloaked VPN also seems to make the Cloaked sync issue even worse when I attempt to delete messages that seem to return multiple times.
same
The VPN is once again very degraded speed wise. To go from 200+ MBPS without the VPN to 20+ MBPS connected to the VPN. Even when I switch between regions or servers, the issues persist during certain times of the day. The VPN definitely seems to lack in necessary resources during high demand. While the region that Cloaked VPN picks may be technically the fastest based on proximity to my connection point. It's not necessarily the fastest based on likely high user demand.
Which would also likely explain the regular periods of connection failures during certain times of the day.
I think this might also be due to Cloaked using an outdated security protocol. At this point, they should be implementing WireGuard, which is the most modern and up to date VPN security protocol available. It is pretty clear the servers need better optimization and a stronger overall security implementation, and adding WireGuard would significantly improve both performance and security.
It would mean selecting a better configuration for datapacket.com on the servers can also play a big part when it comes to configuration of the servers.
@pearl fjord @tribal veldt this has been reported internally FYI
I have to say, the improved speed is nice. I just wish I did not have to keep force closing the app every time I disconnect or am disconnected from the Cloaked VPN.
Okay, I now have to disagree with myself. The improved speed is definitely inconsistent. It took 3 attempts to get a good connection speed this time.
How many times is the current Cloaked app on Android now going to crash when connected to the VPN? It's bad enough having to constantly force close the app just to get the VPN to even work.
<@&887708274592473108> Any update on if the VPN connection speed issue has been improved any?
Let me see if the VPN team can share anything about this
The vpn is definitely getting worse. Between randomized achieving 1 seconds latency or switching from being connected to an ip address to simply connecting to loading without disconnecting..
Not sure if this issue is related to the weird speed issues going on.. https://discord.com/channels/886979306373414912/1499262323838161026
When this happens, my connection speed goes from 200mbps to 12 to 15 mbps and the only fix is to disconnect the VPN or to switch between regions a few times.
