are you asking how to make clay or mud?

It requires you to soak a dirt block with a water bottle to turn it into mud, and then place it over a dripstone block which has a dripstone below it, which will "dry out" the mud block and turn it into clay.
Then you make a clay block, dye it whatever colour you want and then smelt it and get glazed terracotta with these pretty patterns

and you can put 4 blocks together to form patterns like
