i have like never interacted with databases before and i know it is a touchy subject and many people here have many very radical and fiery opinions and preferences and thats why im afraid to even ask. i'd rather save everything to json files than touch sql queries but i decided i need to move on and be a bigger better person. i'd still start with just something easy and do something without tables and joins. let's say points between two players in a game, few matches per day, over a few days. ai recommended mongo for nosql, i thought great must be light weight then, unlike postgres which was like 600mb but no mongo is also 800mb if im even downloading the right thing because it is pushing me to sign up for atlas or what, with a paid freaking plan and azure or aws deployment but god freaking damn it leave me alone i just need like 2-3 entries locally on my server machine self hosted while ai is already constructing for me a whole ass firebase app with esoteric frameworks ive never heard off (js btw, but couldnt not put the python tag to this post). so like what should i use am i even on the right track with starting this simple thing, because im tempted to once again go back to saving stupid json files

ive recently removed docker from my laptop i did not see an usecase for it for myself

#

and my server has like 8gigs right now

more hassle to migrate right now at 1am than i am willing to give, i am running game servers

light finch
frank plover
#

i always assumed its not that big of a deal to read like 1-2 entries but turns out it needs a whole gigabyte of a program

#

oh its not, its an old as fuck slow as molasses laptop i used lol

light finch
frank plover
#

like, you know, i could just with open("myfile.json") as f: and be on my merry way i just had not thought dbs need such an overhead of a program, rivaling the sizes of some apps .

frank plover

frank plover
#

that does sound like me

once valve comes out with their gaming os i might switch

#

but i just know my adobe media encoder server will cease to function if i do it rn

#

and stuff just works rn

light finch
frank plover
#

fuck adobe indeed

#

anyway so mongo

#

do i need the router

#

i guess so

#

everysthing else is 0KB

#

i misremembered i have 6 gigs left on the ssd

light finch
light finch
#

if yes then go and delte all the cash files freed like 62gb other day on my vm by doing that

frank plover
#

huh what this

light finch
#

leave default

#

basicly makes it a service instead of a app

frank plover
#

that would be cool

#

keep it on the server machine and i just connect locally from my personal laptop

#

oh is this like accessing network attached storage using the credentials of the server machine?

#

that is not needed though

#

im guessing i wont need the compass gui

light finch
light finch
#

its very big in size

frank plover
#

is everything just a fucking electron app?

frank plover
#

the delay suggests youve been making this meme just right now havent you

light finch
frank plover
#

okay installed?

#

do i just

#

mongodb://192.168.100.69:27017

light finch
frank plover
#

dont have a database set up yet

light finch
frank plover
#

yea tldr

#

oo it has a shell

light finch
#

😂

#

could also maby have used the test db to welp test

frank plover
#

oh there is one?

light finch
#

yup "test"

frank plover
#

yea ill have to look into that

#

what in the fuck 2 gigabytes

frank plover
#

might ditch it tbf

frank plover
light finch
# frank plover might ditch it tbf

nice ai, and i whould have sugested it but u insited on json so ummm, sqllite and json are like water and fire both wanting to cost you your soul

frank plover
#

ah huh

#

i mean i didnt insist just thought what i was considering up to right now

light finch
#

then maby use it , tbh all road leads to containers eventually

frank plover
#

once i will feel the need to migrate and jump ships, machines hardware and providers and server hosts and everything

#

but im not a developer so all good

#

just shows

#

oh god

light finch
#

fun , good thing i also do hosting and management for $

frank plover
#

i have my own domain and my own lil server machine for this purpose.

light finch
#

then USE IT 🫠

frank plover
#

i dooooo

#

ive just never done this shit before

#

oh how great

#

ive never touched express before

#

looks like another view based js framework because we didnt have enough

light finch
frank plover
#

any

#

im a python boy

#

ive had two years of webdev in uni and 2 (3because i failed) years of databases and i loathe and despise both

#

i dont remember anything

frank plover
#

sql

light finch
#

frank plover
