It's supposed to be related to server subscriptions iirc, or meant to be used with them
I was only able to add media channels to my server when I enabled server subscriptions (and then trolled discord by disabling server subscriptions and keeping the channel)
based on their article about media channels, you can lock certain posts behind server subscriptions and it also has features such as a linking button and stuff
other than that it's not very different from forum channels
