The Cool People’s Model (3 Oct 2025)

rocky spear
#

Is this the model with full FOV?

Did Harry troll me just to give in last minute?

THONK so hot people can't use this?

I don’t know who chose the name Cool People’s Model but CP in today’s political climate is sus

I'm totally fine with us not giving this one an acronym

#

Yeah it's The Cool People's model 😎

bronze totem
#

The long is lowkey smooth

vague notch
#

i'm gonna head out and try it in a min

cosmic haven
#

If it’s real good I’ll probably use it for Vegas trip

vague notch
#

my real test is can it maintain speed on highways without slowing down with no traffic

bronze totem
#

Lateral is better on neighborhood roads that don’t have lane lines

vague notch
#

which all gWM models failed at

bronze totem
#

Doesn’t hug left

outer night
#

It did not want to stop for red lights for me 😒

bronze totem
#

I have a feeling this isn’t a long worked model, despite it being smoother, I can tell there’s some lateral smoothing

outer night
#

Lat felt pretty much similar to gwm8 to me.. which is a good thing

bronze totem
rocky spear
#

I’m curious to see if it cuts corners

bronze totem
unreal pelican
rocky spear
bronze totem
rocky spear
#

In Teslas it can cut the corner too sharp to the point that it’s driving you off the road

#

I’m hoping increased FOV fixes it

vague notch
#

something I've immediately noticed is the lateral planner is smoother like on screen

#

like it's fps has gone up

#

idk if it has but it feels like it

#

feels very slow on local roads, super reluctant to get up this speed

#

but mind it is nighttime and raining here

#

so far very impressed with turns and unwinds

#

seems to actually stop at T junctions now at the stop line which is nice

#

traffic lights not so much 😁

rocky spear
vague notch
#

biggest problem so far is its way too cautious on speed

#

having to kick the accelerator a lot

rocky spear
vague notch
#

I always run full experimental to test the model properly

#

but could help for dailying

#

yeah this model does not give a fuck what your set speed is it'll go as slow as it feels

#

which is usually about 20% under the speed limit

#

pretty wide turns not at risk of hitting the curb

#

but definitely a risk of hitting the traffic island

#

it feels like an American driving in Europe and not being used to the thinner roads so it drives slower out of caution

#

I think heavy MADS / DEC users will be a big fan of this model

#

it very rarely goes too fast for a situation and lateral is very good

#

local roads anyway, just about to test highway now

#

this is a 30mph road according to the model, was sat pretty solidly at it

#

even though speed limit set to 70

#

SCC-V and SCC-M disabled for the purposes of testing

#

yeah motorway is a no go on experimental

#

might be different during the day potentially but I doubt that much

vague notch
#

that concludes my testing 😁

I'm definitely getting some swaying, idk if the night time road is messing with it

keen marsh
# vague notch

ugh gWMv4-8 is the same as this, e2e is a regression:/

#

@opaque gull you should add “California rolling stop”

vague notch
#

okay, my overall opinion of this model:

as caveats this is in RHD, UK, night time and wet roads, and comparing against Nevada model

overall vibe: leisurely Sunday driver, safe but slow especially on highways. prepare to get tailgated a lot

local roads:

  • very good lateral, handles turns and unwinds very well, parked car avoidance about the same, traffic lights maybe if there's other cars stopped in other lanes otherwise rolls them
  • longitudinal slow downs very good for T junctions and roundabout, but fails to speed up to appropriate speeds even when the road is clear

highways:

  • lateral good as ever, lane changes good
  • longitudinal very bad slows down to 45mph on a completely clear 3 lane highway, unable to judge slowing for lead vehicles because they're all going faster than me

recommended for: MADS/DEC users
not recommended for: experimental pure blood users

#

this model has the best lateral yet, but I still gotta give it to Nevada/DTRv6 for experimental long for running at sustained speed limits

#

survey filled out 👌🏻

vague notch
# opaque gull

also same on the traffic light question would be good, mine always slows for them but rolls them

keen marsh
#

I got it to stop almost every time

#

there was once it decided not to brake at all so that was fun !

vague notch
#

it'll stop if there's someone else at them I've found

#

but if it's empty it tends to slow down and roll them

#

someone else in another lane that is, will obviously stop if behind a lead

keen marsh
#

I got it to stop without a lead at a red light

#

seems it’s still hit or miss with the intersections

tall sphinx
#

I had to switch off gWM8 on my 500 mile trip. At high speeds and winding highways it just wasn’t stable enough on lateral. Went back to Nevada. But I’ll do 300 miles on this model tomorrow if it’s not a waste of time…

unreal pelican
#

Steering felt very smooth, no hugging on the highway.

It was also consistently veering out of lane on sharp local turns without giving any warning

cosmic haven
#

Definitely some right hugging for me

vague notch
wicked shore
#

Lateral seems better. At low speeds doing 90 degree turns it performs smoothly, even if not fully making the turn, where other models jerk

wicked shore
#

ChatGPT thinks the branch name could mean:
tcp-nr1-driving ≈ “Trajectory (or Transformer) Control Policy – Neural Revision 1 – Driving Model”

opaque gull
#

They're trying to push this model to master tomorrow

#

idk if that's gonna happen

wary peak
#

I tried it, it's okay

#

DTRv6 still my fav lol

opaque gull
# wary peak DTRv6 still my fav lol

I like DTRv6 for highway driving, it's very smooth.
But on other roads it takes the smooth factor too far and end up outputting stuff like this #sunnypilot-clips message

civic sphinx
#

Dtr long is unmatched

keen marsh
#

yes!

opaque gull
#

Yeah, another drive confirms this model has an aggressively toxic relationship with the left lane line.

#

Way too much left hugging

tall sphinx

I found Highway lat to be pretty nice and stable, better than gWM8. But the vision distance for stopped leads wasn’t great, not much long urgency

I tested this yesterday but forgot my preliminary thoughts by now. I'm sorry for literal brain damage and desire to shitpost fragments of ideas prior to a formal review.

#

I vaguely recall something about it wanting to go full send through two stop signs.

orchid wraith
#

I like this model. It sometimes has some weird behavior when lane lines are absent or “confusing”, but it does really well on the highway.

sweet mist
#

This model seems to have improved long on the highway when it comes to being cut off by other cars, it keeps a safe distance but doesn’t brake as hard.

It also feels like it has a longer follow distance.

It stopped and started at every red/green light that I came to.

Lateral seems to be good, it shifts in lane slightly to give space to other cars/semis on the interstate but doesn’t seem to wander needlessly.

Overall this model doesn’t make me want to go back to Nevada yet so I’ll stick with it

weary canyon

#

The lat on this was slow and lazy. I'm using 50% min active torque on HKG angle steering which I need to try increasing to see if it makes a difference.

sweet mist
sweet mist
# weary canyon I’ll try that tonight 👍

With firehose/nevada specifically I feel the models have stayed somewhat where I put them until they react to something in the environment. On my way to work I’ll have to be check and see how it biases double yellow or dashed yellow lines. Sometimes it will stay close or far from those depending on shoulder size.

Drove this one for 1 hour today, mostly highway. Currently tied with WM7 for my favorite model. Going to keep testing this week

inner sleet
#

Is it better than dtr6?

rustic citrus
#

Dtr6 for lateral is unbeatable in my opinion but the long is pretty awful I think long on this model is much much better than dtr6

inner sleet
#

Which one is best overall?

#

@rustic citrus

#

WM7?

rustic citrus
#

I’m liking this model but if you have tried it and don’t like it I would also say try WM7 next and if neither of those try steam powered.

finite sequoia
# inner sleet Which one is best overall?

fwiw this is a highly subjective/opinionated question 😁 you're gonna get different answers from different folks. Give a few models a try. Note where the model is positioning you in the lane and how it handles curves

They shouldn’t, but they do.

And this models doesn't seem to hug at all

Altough i have only driven a short distance on this model

North Dakota era models stayed center for me, but new models do center mostly then drunkenly lean left and sometimes step on the line.

mighty chasm
#

gWM is in disguise 🥸 It loves to cut the corners, too much that it may just switch lanes. Only way I can make this model look good is in the right lane

vague notch
#

this model is like James May, captain slow (but careful)

rustic citrus
#

This model completely ignores traffic cones 🤣 but it’s also the best turning model I’ve used so I’ll take the trade off

civic sphinx

gtr7 still not out yet… I’ll check back later

proper summit
#

Preliminary: TCP seems not terrible. I feel slightly unsettled that it tends to be uncomfortably too right of lane.

bronze totem
#

The turns are so smooth on this model. It has left lane lines during straights but for the smoothness in curves and turns, combined with how smooth the exp long is at braking, I’ll stick with it

Start off my drive and made a assisted left turn and straighten it up and it wanted to turn a sharp right and about run off the road. Had to disable a few times before it tracked again. This is the first this has happened.

What are people's thoughts on TCPM v1 vs v3 for lateral? I think I might prefer v1

karmic cypress
glossy dragon
#

For me in my EV6, TCPv3 has been the best model for consistent driving. Good at lights, but struggled with stop signs. 90° turns are a hard no, but local highways with lights, side streets, and interstate all felt great. I noticed coming out of an SCC-M slowed turn it does not accellerate out and resume speed limit along with other issues with maintaining set speed/changing when posted speed limit changes. Overall the most human feeling lateral I've seen yet. Granted I'm pretty new... Lol

wicked shore
#

Lane changes seem more sluggish and I had right hugging. Wind was strong but mostly from the right, which is weird

toyota On my Lexus TSS2,TCPv3 has a bad long, with rapid acceleration and rapid deceleration both on the highway and street. Lat is OK.
