You most likely ran out of specials and got juggles

If you run out of specials in the air, Black Adam can use sair or uair to stall his momentum and stay in the air (while returning back to the stage)

Other characters have this like Finn uair/sair and Steven nair

Usually the reason you end up without options unexpectedly is cause you used them all to recover, got bopped to the far side of the stage without touching ground, and now you're trying to recover again from a different side.
