The right stick is optional. I don't use the right stick when playing but you could use it if you want to quickly do a directional attack. (it'd be the same input as forward and attack or down and attack etc.)

You don't even need Gleamium, you need to do a bunch of the Rift things, and you'll just unlock him. But yes, doing the Rifts will take quite a while still
