But really it's all about muscle memory and experience

Well other players are also gaining/losing rank too. So even if you are top 30k as a Velma player your rank all together can just be 1.7m because these other people have better MMR then you. It is really wonky how these things work.

In short it appears like it isn't based of a total MMR and more based on specific characters MMR, which is why people notice that their MMR isn't changing when they switch to a new character. It only presents your higher ranked characters.
