Play in The Lab first. Get a good idea of a characters basic thing. Maybe look up a combo guide and try them out in The Lab till you feel like you can reliably pull them off then try playing bot matches till you get the hang of the flow of a basic fight. After that you need to just play against people and practice. Don't get mad if you get stomped, just take it as a laerning opportunity always.

also maybe go into the control bindings and see if changing it a little might help out.

like you play a lot of FPS so your muscle memory may favor having something useful on the trigger buttons on a controller if you use one
