His side neutrals are pretty useful for attack his down air and up air neutral can be combined so when you fall do down air when you land the hit do up air also I use side special when I’m about to fall off the side also using up ground special can help with spammers and down special which is just for traps last is neutral special which throws Tom and jerry if you keep pressing the neutral special then you throw tennis balls if you hit them with your racket which is neutral attack it will fling it to the direction you hit it to and do extra damage

Also when jerry is not with you depending on which side neutral attack you do he’ll throw a cork at that direction

Yea and with what I told you it’ll be simpler because the stuff the game tells you is very limited and kinda sets you up for failure what I told you can help you already have an understanding with them

find a character you like and play that character, learn their moves, hitboxes, etc and get used to the flow of the game

i'd probably recommend trying finn, he's in the free rotation right now and his kit's pretty easy to learn for beginners

Do the tutorial even the advance ones they’ll help so much also you can test which character you feel nice with in “the lab” so that you can practice or you can play against bots and co-op vs a.i to get a feel for the game before going against real people

I think everyone is beginner friendly besides the "expert" labeled characters.
Cooldown moves might be too hard to get used to but the majority of characters have cooldown on moves
