It also locks progress behind certain skins, either tied to battle pass or events.

Battle Pass is self explanatory but events, if you don't play in a certain period of time to get the required skin for free (or don't play enough bc of how long it can take to even get one) YOU GOTTA pay money!!!

The Rift is easily solvable, if you have someone carry you. I can see your issue with that for rifts. However just do what missions you can do while also gaining event currency from matches. It‘s not impossible.
