I've played every official format from 2007 to 2023 at least once

I bought many a bakugan in my youth and i dont think i ever played the card game

[frozen light]

That's a pretty common thing. Most people seemed to be more interested in collecting the toys rather than actually playing the game

The fact that the old game was pretty boring doesn't really help either

The official rules for gen 1 (the first 4 seasons of Bakugan) started off kinda interesting, but got more and more boring as they introduced "support pieces" with each season

The game had a massive powercreep issue as a result (on top of them printing higher numbers on Bakugan with each season)

The lowest G a Bakugan could have was 250 and the highest was somewhere above 1100

This was evidently an issue caused by Spin Master, the company who was in charge of all the Bakugan stuff everywhere outside of Japan while Sega Toys handled Japan and a handful of other asian countries. The ST version of the rules are slightly different and their Bakugan didn't suffer as much from powercreep as the SM Bakugan did

The most noteworthy difference between the rules is the lack of a "Critical KO" rule for the SM game (post HSP era). A critcal KO happens when you roll your Bakugan onto a card while also knocking an opponent's Bakugan off of a card. If you pull that off, you win the Gate Card your Bakugan stands on automatically instead of having to do a Power Battle (comparing numbers of 2 opposing Bakugan that are on the same card)

The Bakugan in Japan were made of higher quality materials so some people think SM got rid of the rule to make sure the toys don't break during normal gameplay

It might look like that on a surface level, but there's a lot more that goes into the gameplay mechanic. The main thing is that you don't win a card for just knocking a Bakugan off. Your Bakugan has to actually stand on a card by the time it stops moving. There was also a whole line of Japan exclusive Bakugan who were either made to be really good at knocking other Bakugan off or being really good at staying on a card

For example, there's this Bakugan called "Win Dmill (I didn't make that name up), who has metal blades that pop out when spinning so that it can knock Bakugan off of cards, but you have to spin him in a very specific way for it to work

There are 2 Bakugan that have rubber bands on them that make the opposing Bakugan bounce back when they get hit to prevent a KO

There's also Naga Daja, who's basically indestructable

I could go on about how this mechanic adds a lot of depth to the game that's missing in the international version of the rules, but I don't think there's any point in doing that

I forgot to mention that the international version of the game had a deck that wins 99% of the time

The game was kinda doomed to fail

The 2019 reboot had a really good game at the start, though. They made an actual TCG where you use a 40 card deck instead of just 6

But they completely gave up on that when the pandemic happened

And now we have Beyblade Bakugan

But Spin Master didn't say anything about them in the rules for their first big event

So some kids actually used them

I didn't attend the event myself because it was in America and I'm in Europe, but the people who were there talk about it like as if they're traumatized

To be fair, I haven’t come up against many good IGs, much like gizmo, so I haven’t exactly learned the MU for them yet.

There was this one called SteliosKontos that I’d wash every time and at one point he ran away whenever we queued up. They were top 100 globally too at one point, but the difference between him and skizzy is insane

I think it was more so the grab into off stage up special combo or slam. Either way, if it hit correctly, you were done for. Unless you were freakin Superman
