the object is selected and it's clearly animated but the keyframes won't show up in my dope sheet or timeline

  1. What version of blender are you on?

  2. If you go into the object properties, are any parameters keyframed (see attached image)?

  3. If you go into the graph editor, can you see any keyframes there?

  4. Open up the dope sheet sidebar and disable "show selected only", ALL keyframes in the scene will be visible, but you should also see the keyframes for that object. You might be able to trace where the problem occurs.

  5. If you are sure it's not a user error, and you're on a stable release of blender - make a bug report.

if you are keyframing a node then make sure the node is selected as well as the object
