I want to make a dripping liquid like in the doughnut tutorial but usually when you subdivide an object you get more points but in this case i am not getting any points but the object is subdividing. Could someone tell me what i am doing wrong.

As long as you do not apply the subdivision, it will not actually be subdivided when you are in edit mode. You can do subdivision in edit mode, but that is part of the so called destructive workflow (as far as I know), but the subdivide modifier isn't.
So to make it work, either apply the modifier, or subdivide in edit mode.
But maybe there is another way of doing what you want to do, although I am not sure
