#Steam cloud broke modding (I think)

So I am having a problem where when I boot my save it keeps being duplicated into the 8th save slot (via more save slots mod)
I think this broke because I tried to launch it on my home pc after running modded on my laptop, and that caused steam to not know how to save things due to steam cloud? I'm not sure exactly what's causing it though, because it did not do this yesterday or the day before, but DID do it on the previous pack where I ended up originally trying to get it to work

I don't know what it is doing or if its going to break stuff or how to fix it
...come to think of it it might be trying to read the temp_mod_storage folder that got created as well when I imported the pack for some reason?

I don't want to try and go back into the save, especially because when I tried that with the previous rando where this happened it did not function properly at all when I went back into it on my laptop

I've put the most recent 3 modlogs on here (since this version of the problem only occurred earlier today which is 2, and then one is from when me and my friend stopped last night)

  • OS: Windows 11 for laptop, Windows 10 for home pc
  • Patch:
  • Mod installer: Lumafly
  • Platform: Steam
  • HKMP is via hamachi, but I don't belive the problem is HKMP

If you're playing modded, steam doesn't sync the modded save data, and opening the file without the modded data basically breaks it entirely

but the weird part is is that I didnt do that on this save

#

I did on the previous one

#

this save still works

#

but the way it saves appears to be jank

also the game REALLY does not like it if you try to pick up defneder crest while already having the upgraded version that pale court charms gives you

#

but thats more of a side thing

Basically, if you're going between two computers, then some data will come with you via Steam Cloud, and other data will be left on the computer.

The data that is left there will still be there if you come back to that computer with a new save

ok but the duplicated save is updating to be whatever my current save was when I started the session?
I'm very confused

#

since I erased both copies of the save when we restarted due to that bug happening on the previous save, shouldnt that have fixed it but didnt based on what your saying?

To some extent it may depend on what is in your modded data for that save.

Basically, if you start a brand new save, and there is modded save data tied to that slot, then that modded save data can get applied to the current save of the same save slot

oh thats weird
alright I guess I'll just refrain from using slots 6 and 8 (since slot 6 is where the bugged save orignally occured and slot 8 is where hte diped save gets stored)

Save Files

What do save files looks like?

  • Each Hollow Knight save file is a user#.dat where # is the save slot for the file
  • You can rename user3.dat to user1.dat to set it to your first save slot
  • You can keep a copy of all of your save files by copy and pasting them into a different folder on your computer

Reverting Backups

  • Automatic backups are called user#.dat.bak#, where the first # is the save slot, and the second # is the backup number. You will usually have your last three backups
  • You restaore a backup by deleting the main file, and then removing the .bak# part of the backup version

Modded Saves

  • A modded save may also have a user#.modded.json (and similarly named backup). This file and the user#.dat are part of the save

Where are the files?

  • On windows, the default path for Save Files is:
    • %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
    • You should just copy and paste that path directly into the File Explorer path bar at the top.
  • For other operating systems (and Xbox Games), type ?tag saves into chat

I need a specific type of save file

Editing save files

  • MoreSaves: With the MoreSaves mod installed, you can edit save files from the Menu, by going to Options > Mods > MoreSaves
  • QoL: Opening a save with QOL installed will create an extra save file called user#.json, which can be edited using Notepad or a similar text editor
  • DebugMod: While not an intended purpose, you can edit some parts of your save file using Debug, such as Nail Damage, and those changes will remain even after uninstalling the mod

^ you could go on and delete the extra save data, which should fix it
