#HKMP rando itemsync

I've heard the beta isn't compatible with most other mods, but if you can get it working it's with the guide below

HKMP allows players to interact with each other, but it does not synchronize the world in any way itself.

The game should start normally. Players will still not see each other because you must also set up the HKMP multiplayer mod as normal now. If you’re playing with friends and don’t want to see other people, make sure to create your own HKMP server.

The itemsync server is separate from the hkmp server.
like I have the "start multiplayer" option, I can host a save with itemsync and all, but my friend can't join. Even with the correct IP and port (I'm port forwarding), he times out

I'm trying to play multiplayer randomizer with a friend, and I want the items to be synced. My problem is essentially that there's too many menus and mods, and not enough clear documentation on this subject it seems. What I've tried so far, many things, couldn't tell you exactly what. We've just tried fucking around with the settings to no avail. We're both on Windows. I'm not using Hamashi or whatever, I'm port forwarding directly on the router.
Now, this "DTLS connection timed out" problem doesn't appear when I tried hosting a normal not rando-ed save. We managed to play together in vanilla at some point, so I'm thinking the issue could be something with rando. But I've seen people play randos together on youtube so surely it's possible
If you've successfully hosted before it may just be, as I initially said, that the beta is not compatible. But I wouldn't expect that to prevent the connection. But I don't play hkmp, let alone the beta.
