Hollow Knight Crashes upon opening after installing a mod โš ๏ธ

This error can happen for a number of reasons. Read through all of the common reasons below to see which might apply to you.

  • Your game patch doesn't match the installer you used

    • Modding is currently done on patch 1.5.78+, and this is what all current installers require. If you're on Steam, then make sure you are not accidentally using a Beta patch (Beta should be set to "None")
    • "Mod Installer" ( Zote) and Mod Installer 2 are made for version 1.4.3.2, and should no longer be used. If you watched or read something that said to use these, then it is outdated information.
    • There aren't installers for other patches, like 1.2.2.1. If you are looking for speedrunning mod help, then type ?tag 1221 into chat for more information.
  • Something didn't install correctly

    • Right-Click the installer, and select "Run as Administrator"
    • Ensure that the installer is not still in a .zip file (if you downloaded it as a .zip, then you'll need to Extract the files from it)
    • Make sure that you moved the Installer file(s) out of your Downloads folder
  • Your game is cracked / pirated hollowpirate

    • Piracy is not supported in most communities for games, and discussing it is against Discord Community Guidelines. Mods are not considered compatible with pirated copies, and you will not get troubleshooting support in any of the main servers for them.
    • Modding is only supported on the official computer versions from Steam, GoG, or Xbox Games.
    • If you do not have a supported version, then please get it and then you can get support with modding. Asking for assistance with unsupported versions may result in moderation action.
    • Hollow Knight goes on sale regularly, and you can keep an eye on this website for when it is: https://isthereanydeal.com/game/hollowknight/

Please provide more information!

People cannot help you if they do not know all of what is going on.

Your post should include Useful Information, such as:

  • Detailed explanation (What is wrong, what have you tried, what are you expecting to happen, etc)
  • Screenshots of the issues / errors (How do I take screenshots?)
  • Post your Modlog.txt file if you're playing modded (this is found in your Save Files folder, which you can learn how to access by typing ?tag modlog into chat)
    • -# This is required if you are playing modded. This is not required if your problem is getting the game to be modded.
  • What Operating System you are on (Windows / MacOS / Linux / Other)
  • What patch are you on (This should show on the main menu)
  • What Mod Installer you are using (Lumafly / Scarab / HKMM / ModInstaller1 / ModInstaller2 / Other)
  • What platform you are playing the game from (Steam / Gog / Gamepass / Cracked / Pirated)

Additionally, please ensure that you've checked https://discord.com/channels/879125729936298015/1047656117913800704 and the pins of #hk-general for common problems and information.

ModLog

"ModLog.txt" can be found in the same folder as your save files (you can drag and drop the file into discord)

  • Open Modlog with Lumafly (you should be able to copy and paste it into Discord)
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight\
  • MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/unity.Team Cherry.Hollow Knight/
  • Linux: ~/.config/unity3d/Team Cherry/Hollow Knight/
Note: some mod installers such as Lumafly have an "Open Saves Folder ๐Ÿ“" button which allows you to find the ModLog easily. Otherwise, follow the steps below:

To get the ModLog on Windows

  1. Press โŠž + R
  • Note: โŠž is the Windows button, in between Ctrl and Alt on your keyboard
  1. Copy and paste this into it %appdata%\..\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight and hit "OK".
  2. ModLog.txt is in this folder.

To get the ModLog on MacOS

  1. From the Finder, click "Go" in the menu at the top of the screen and select "Go to folder".
  2. Copy and paste this into it ~/Library/Application Support/unity.Team Cherry.Hollow Knight/ and press enter.
  3. ModLog.txt is in this folder.

#

i managed to open the game and when i load the save it crash

#

after i open a modlog whas should i do

warm maple
#

send it here

signal knot
#

what

warm maple
#

it's a file. Send the file here

signal knot
#

What file

warm maple
#

ModLog.txt

signal knot
#

Wich one

warm maple
#

the only one named ModLog

signal knot
warm maple
#
  • Please send the file itself, don't take a picture of it as that's way less readable
  • It looks like game didn't even reach the title screen on the session that generated this ModLog, so if it's actually crashing when you open a save then send your ModLog after getting a crash. If you got a crash during the last session before you sent this then something is wrong way before entering a save
signal knot
#

Do what of the all files should i send to you

#

Like this

#

This is after a crash

warm maple
signal knot
warm maple
#

What does the crash look like? Does the game close or is it a "hollow knight isn't responding"?

signal knot
#

the game opens and the knight is moving on the loading screen and crash

warm maple
#

Yeah that is my question, what visually happens during this crash, does the game close or does it say "hollow knight isn't responding"?

signal knot
#

Close

warm maple
#

What does it say when you do this:

signal knot
#

That 2 files are gonna install again

#

I do that again and all files are fine

warm maple
#
  • Does it crash when you launch it through Steam now?
  • After testing that, does it crash if you disable all mods from Lumafly and press "Launch modded game"?
signal knot
#

It still crashes

#

On steam and without mods

lunar hamlet
#

In the same folder as the modlog is a player.log , can you post that as well?

signal knot
signal knot
#

Hello @lunar hamlet

#

I Send it

lunar hamlet
#

Hello @signal knot , it does not appear that you did, which is why I haven't responded

signal knot
#

there

lunar hamlet
#

Try this:
Open the game files location with Steam's Browse Local Files

#

?tag browse

lunar hamlet
#

Then highlight everything that comes up, and delete it

#

When it's done deleting, use Steam's verify again

#

?tag verify

lunar hamlet
#

This will take a bit longer to finish (both the scan and the downloading), but it should make sure that you don't have extra files trying to load

signal knot
#

But like all of this @lunar hamlet

#

Delete it

#

@lunar hamlet

lunar hamlet
#

Yes

signal knot
#

I did it

lunar hamlet
#

If it's done verifying, then try launching the game again

signal knot
#

it didnt help

#

@lunar hamlet

lunar hamlet
#

Can you post the new Player.log ?

#

After posting that, try this:

#

?tag registry

#

Clearing HK Registry Data
This is useful for fixing some uncommon game behaviors, more commonly associated with playing on older patches. Warning: This doing this will reset your local game achievements, including your ability to start a Steel Soul and Godseeker save.
