Team Report

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P5 (Started P4)
"An incredible result for the team - whilst P4 might've been on the cards had we played our strategy right, we still have to be very happy with the result and Nico's brilliant driving as he's so consistently delivered this season - let's f*ing go!!."

#

Liam Lawson - P6 (Started P6)
"A top performance from Liam as well to secure P6, particularly to get the move done on Hadjar in the latter phase of the race - really impressive stuff and a huge weekend for the team."

#

Race Notes - Competitor Review

  • A tale of two extremes for Norris and Verstappen - the former securing a P3 finish and 15 points to extend his lead in the WDC after starting in P15.
  • Conversely, Verstappen finished in P16 where he started after a collision with Sainz - he had to serve a 5s penalty and finish the race with damage as a result.
  • A relief for rookies as Hadjar and Bearman finally score well deserved points - it could've been a different story though with both drivers nursing cars experiencing serious faults to the line.
  • Haas move up to P8 in the WCC after a sensational weekend, particularly with Ocon finishing P4 with an incredible drive.
  • Lerlerc is also emerging as perhaps the dark horse of the WDC, now in P2 after Verstappen's troublesome weekend and only 10 points from Norris.

Round 11: Belgium

#

After another two weeks, it's off to the infamous Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium in what is forecasted to be a very wet weekend for our second sprint weekend of the year.
The team has built a second chassis as part of the recent upgrade package for Liam, so both cars will carry the same package this weekend - a critical weekend to evaluate the two drivers with contract discussions ongoing.
The following upgrades were brought:

  • Chassis (HUL & LAW)
#

Sprint Qualifying

#

SQ1: For yet another weekend, VER is eliminated at the first hurdle and will start the sprint in P20! A number of drivers have spins causing a myriad of yellow flags, with TSU and both Williams drivers also caught up in the chaos

#

SQ2: A disappointing session for Mercedes with RUS and BOT out early despite showing pace in practice - we manage to get both drivers into Q3, with LAW in particular setting a blazing time to finish SQ2 in P3!

#

CHARLES LECLERC TAKES SPRINT POLE IN BELGIUM! A commanding lap by the Ferrari man.

#

Piastri takes P2, whilst Hadjar continues his highly impressive run of form from Silverstone to start P3 in a session where both Norris and Hamilton failed to set a time at all due to spins in the torrential rain!

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P5 (+0.794 from Pole)
"Another fantastic result from Nico in such difficult conditions - a great tone to set for the weekend ahead.

#

Liam Lawson- P8 (+2.018 from Pole)
"A botched lap in Q3 for Liam unfortunately, but to make it into the session at all was impressive - a very good result all things considered.

L1/15 - It's lights out and away we go here in Spa! A rare moment of sunshine for this Sprint

#

L2/15 - PIA holds the lead after his T1 move at the start, with HUL in P5 and LAW losing a spot to NOR into P9

#

HUL sweeps by RIC for P4!

#

L5/15 - LAW has dropped off NOR and HAM, now battling to keep P10

#

L9/15 - RIC locks up from P6 and rejoins in P10 - the Australian seems allergic to points this season

#

The lock up is so severe, he's forced to pit at the end of the lap - disaster once again

#

L12/15 - HUL is making the M compound work late in the race and is closing in on HAD for P3 - can he get to him before the laps run out though?

#

Team Report

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P3 (Started P5)
"Another podium for Nico!! It might only be the Sprint, but it was a highly-impressive drive to chase down Hadjar at the end - huge result for the team and big confidence for the rest of the weekend."

#

Liam Lawson - P9 (Started P8)
"Liam narrowly misses out on points after the two quickest cars on the grid started behind him, so we're not too disheartened - the pace looks strong on both sides of the garage for qualifying ahead."

#

Qualifying

#

Q1: The big story is both Mercedes going out, compounding their dramas from yesterday's Sprint qualifying - RUS experiencing mechanical issues and BOT just unable to find any pace in the car. LAW is out in P19 in a very disappointing result, as well as COL despite his stunning drive to P5 earlier in the Sprint.

#

Q2: RIC is caught out by the changing conditions and will start in P11 tomorrow, with POU putting in an incredible lap in the Sauber to go though into Q3 after the flag!

#

LANDO NORRIS TAKES POLE! A clutch lap from the WDC leader at the end of Q3 to reclaim his qualifying crown!

#

Hamilton and Leclerc will chase down the McLaren driver tomorrow from P2 and P3, with the margins being incredibly small - the top 5 are split by less than 0.1s!

#

Qualifying Top 10

#

Team Report

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P4 (+0.094 from Pole)
"To be within a tenth from pole is incredible - absolute monster performance from Nico once again and the car looks genuinely quick enough to challenge the front runners this weekend, we want a big result tomorrow.

#

Liam Lawson - P19 (+0.344 from Q2)
"Opposite ends of the spectrum in the garage unfortunately with Liam out in Q1 despite the car pace obviously being there - he seems to struggle in both the rain and his overall qualifying pace, it's something he clearly needs to work on.

Qualifying Notes - Competitor Review

  • It's incredibly close at the front between McLaren and Ferrari, and it'll be critical for Norris to finish ahead given his lack of points in the Sprint yesterday.
  • Red Bull seem to lack outright pace here in Spa, with Verstappen once again having a below-par qualifying session.
  • The midfield is a fascinating situation with Williams seeming to have turned around a nightmare weekend so far, whilst Racing Bulls are in the opposite scenario after qualifying - it'll be a hard-fought battle at the backend of the top 10 today.
  • Mercedes will be looking to forget this weekend as they seem destined to leave a Sprint weekend with no points between both cars.
#

Race

#

Race Strategy: With light rain still falling at the start here, we'll start on the inter and see how the race pans out - the forecast shows variable rain, so it could be a battle of strategy today with picking the timing.

#

L1/44 - It's lights out and away we go here in Spa!

#

L1/44 - ⚠️ VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR - DRU (RET)

#

A horror weekend for the Brazilian who DNFed in the Sprint as well - he's out after huge contact with the wall just three corners into the GP!

#

L2/44 - 🟢 Green flag

#

L4/44 - 🔴 RED FLAG - RIC (RET), SAI (RET) & OCO (RET)

#

WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE IN SPA! RIC misjudges the breaking zone and bowls through SAI and OCO, leaving the race red flagged and a total of four cars out in four laps!

#

⚠️ RIC gets a 10 second time penalty for the crash which he will have to serve in grid penalties next race in Hungary.

#

L5/44 - For the second time we're away in Spa, with HUL putting on a huge move into T1 on LEC and is up to P3!

#

L7/44 - HUL is now having to defend as hard as he can for P3

#

L10/44 - Race Standings

#

L12/44 - The pace of VER is simply too much and HUL drops to P4, with the Dutchman proving why he has such a forboding reputation in the wet

#

L15/44 - Further back, LAW gets by BOR in the same spot with an aggressive move for P14

#

L16/44 - PIA dives down the inside of HUL for P5, who is having to cool the intermediate tyre after pushing so hard early on

#

L24/44 - LAW pits after BEA comes in the lap before to try to overcut, but the push lap isn't enough - he comes out behind once again in P18 as the grid begins to cycle through their stops for a new inter

#

L25/44 - HUL follows the next lap in

#

The stop is slightly slow though and he comes out in between the two Alpines, with COL ahead yet to stop and GAS behind already stopped - it's critical he clears COL quickly but the Argentinian will not make it easy!

#

L26/44 - Critically HUL gets by COL and is now in clear air in P9, with cars ahead yet to stop still

#

L28/44 - Out at the front, VER has managed to undercut HAM with an earlier stop to snatch P2 - NOR ahead has still not stopped and appears to be trying to go long on this tyre! Surely McLaren don't intend to go to the end of the race on this one set?

#

L29/44 - ALB spins at the final corner coming out of the chicane and drops from P13 to P16 (LAW is one of the drivers to capitalise, moving into P15)

#

L31/44 - ALO now spins at the same location, with another of our cars nearly being taken out in the process! This time its HUL who moves up to P7

#

LAW has a spin at T1 on the same lap, with the changable conditions catching drivers out as tyres begin to wear

#

L34/44 - Race Standings

#

It does appear after all that NOR is going to the finish on the same intermediate tyre he started the red flag restart with, with some incredible tyre management so far. VER is closing in though with 10 laps to go and the risk may not pay off with how the delta looks currently - time will tell

#

Several others in the field are trying the same strategy to mixed effect - namely LEC, TSU, ALO and HAD

#

L35/44 - HUL is struggling to make a move stick on TSU for P6, and now GAS has closed in and joined the fight!

#

L36/44 - HUL finally dummies TSU under braking and takes P6

#

L39/44 - However, the battling has cost him in tyre wear and GAS doesn't miss the opportunity to strike for P6

#

L42/44 - With three laps remaining, VER and HAM are within sight of NOR but will they run out of laps?

#

L44/44 - NOR has a 2.4s gap over VER coming onto the final lap and looks to set to hold on despite a huge effort from the four-time champion behind - what a race!

#

Further back, POU has cleared a struggling TSU and now has just one lap between himself and P8 after a stunning drive today - RUS also deserves a mention in P10 from P22 and could still take P9 from TSU

Race Results

#

Team Report

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P7 (Started P4)
"P7 is a good result all things considered today, with the pace up front proving just too much for us. It was a shame to lose P6 though from the battle with Tsunoda, but sometimes that's just racing - it's still a good points haul ultimately."

#

Liam Lawson - P13 (Started P19)
"A tough day for Liam in tricky conditions - without DRS it was always going to be very challenging to move forward, Liam's performance in qualifying ultimately cost him this weekend."

#

Race Notes - Competitor Review

  • Leclerc continues his inconsistent streak which is starting to cost him in the WDC, particularly after a strong weekend for Norris and Verstappen alike.
  • Another horror show for Ricciardo with both a DNF and a 5-place grid penalty for Hungary - surely he can't hold onto this seat for much longer with these results?
  • Bottas also continues to massively underperform in the Mercedes as the last finishing car this weekend, with teammate Russell finishing P9 after starting P22 - the pressure is at an all-time high due to Antonelli's exceptional results in F2.
  • A return to form for Alpine this weekend with a strong showing for both Gasly and Colapinto, particularly for the Argentinian youngster to put points on the board with a strong showing in mixed conditions.
  • Pourchaire masters the elements to finally have a breakout weekend and score his first points as well - it leaves Drugovich as the only driver yet to score points (excluding Doohan after his axing from the Alpine seat).

Mid-Season Plot Points

  • It's a tight battle at the front of the field in the WDC, with Norris in the box seat currently but still under big pressure from Leclerc and Verstappen.
  • The gap is even closer in the WCC, with McLaren leading from Ferrari by 17 points.
  • Car development is proving critical across the grid, with Mercedes and Haas in particular taking big steps in the last few races.
  • There are several seats under threat before even the end of the season, with Ricciardo and Bottas massively underperforming and costing their teams badly in the WCC.
#

Breaking News

#

Big news in the paddock before Hungary, with Nico Hulkenberg and George Russell extending their deals with their respective teams!
The 37 year-old German will stay at least one more season at Porsche after continuing to impress this season on top of his strong 2024 results, meaning teammate Liam Lawson will now have to search for a drive elsewhere due to Oscar Piastri joining the team in 2026. Whilst the young Kiwi will be disappointed, this decision can be considered unsurprising given the considerable margin of points between the two drivers in the last 18 months - there is clearly raw talent with Lawson but it remains unrefined and inconsistent, whilst Hulkenberg has shown to be consistently capable of maximising results. It will be a fascinating 2026 to see how he stacks up against Piastri, particularly given his age as Hulkenberg approaches the twilight of his career.

#

Elsewhere, the worst kept secret in the paddock is finally out in the open with Russell extending with Mercedes. Whilst some wondered if he take up the opportunity of Piastri leaving McLaren to join the current WCC leaders, the former Mercedes junior driver is believed to have a huge amount of faith in the team to return to the top step in the sport. Mercedes themselves will be relieved to have the deal completed due to the Brit's highly impressive drives this season, with both McLaren and Red Bull believed to have pursued talks with the 27 year-old and identify him as a future WDC winner. In particular, it leaves McLaren in an interesting position in the driver market as there are a limited amount of drivers out of contract for next season (unless they are willing to splurge on buying out a contract). Furthermore, the majority are relatively unproven talent - Gabriel Bortoleto perhaps is the most likely option at this stage, with the highly-impressive Brazilian having driven under McLaren backing in the past.

#

Round 12: Hungary

#

The calendar compresses once again, as we head to Hungary with just a week since the sprint weekend in Belgium. It'll be an interesting weekend after Nico's new contract was announced - whilst many are questioning if Liam's motivation will be affected, he now has to drive for his future with a limited amount of seats left for next season. We have no upgrades to bring this weekend due to the quick turnaround time, as well as focus beginning back at the factory on research for the 2026 regulations due to the large changes coming into effect next year.

#

Qualifying

#

Q1: BOT goes out at the first hurdle once again, only managing P21! Both Haas cars also exit early, as well as GAS who will be disappointed with that.

#

Q2: HAD brings out the red flag early on with a huge crash - HUL can only manage P15 at the dying stages after a messy lap, whilst LAW makes Q3! RIC also makes an error in his only lap of the session and will start P16.

#

OSCAR PIASTRI TAKES HIS FIRST POLE OF THE SEASON! An incredible lap at the death of Q3!

#

Hamilton shows his form has well and truly returned to take P2, whilst Norris takes P3 with all three drivers split by less than +0.1s for the second race weekend running!

#

Qualifying Top 10

#

Team Report

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P14 (+0.328 from Q3)
"A disappointing result considering what the car could've accomplished today - we'll regroup and try for points tomorrow.

#

Liam Lawson - P6 (+0.575 from Pole)
"Conversely, it was a really impressive performance from Liam today to start P6 tomorrow - these are the kind of results we've wanted to see from him this year.

#

Hungary GP Starting Grid

#

*LEC (P7) and RIC (P15) have taken 5-place grid penalties after changing engine components overnight, whilst HAD (P16) will start at the back of the grid with a 10-place grid drop to repair his power unit after his crash in Q2

#

Qualifying Notes - Competitor Review

  • Things remain incredibly close at the front and tomorrow's race is anyone's game, particularly after Leclerc taking a grid penalty this weekend - Norris and Verstappen will want to capitalise.
  • Colapinto continues to justify Alpine's decision to replace Doohan with a huge performance in qualifying - Gasly will feel the pressure mounting after a mistake in Q1 put him out early.
  • Williams have made a mini-resurgence and are looking good to break their unwanted streak of no point scoring across the last few races.
  • For Bottas and Ricciardo, this race could very well be their last of the season in their respective seats depending on the outcomes - it's do or die.

#

Race Strategy: Hungary always pushes the tyres right to the limit, so it'll be at least a two-stop race today - we'll look to capitalise on Liam's track position and split Nico's strategy to come home strong.

#

L1/70 - It's lights out and away we go here in Hungary!

#

Contact between LEC and POU coming out of T3! They both manage to rejoin but they lose a bunch of spots in the process

#

⚠️ POU gets a 5 second time penalty for the incident

#

L2/70 - ⚠️ VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR - COL (RET)

#

L4/70 - 🟢 Green flag

#

L10/70 - Race Standings

#

A steady start for both LAW and HUL, with both drivers starting to come under pressure from those behind

#

L12/70 - VER is reporting engine issues already - it could be a long race for the Dutchman

#

Further back, TSU is all over LAW for P6 with the S tyre quickly falling off for the Kiwi

#

L13/70 - HUL gets by BEA into T1 for P11

#

Barely anything seperates the grid from P10-19 - this could be a fascinating race in the midfield

#

HAM is also reporting issues on his car - the 28.8C heat is already taking it's toll here

#

L15/70 - Contact between HAM and NOR for P2! They both seem to escape damage but the elbows are out here in Hungary

#

L16/70 - THEY HIT AGAIN! Once again HAM keeps P2 but they could both be out soon if they keep this up

#

L18/70 - LAW pits and TSU follows him in - they emerge in the same order thanks to a good stop from our pit crew

#

L20/70 - TSU gets by LAW for what will be P6 after the grid cycles through their first round of stops

#

L23/70 - ALB moves by LAW with an incredible move around the outside of T1!

#

HUL stops as well onto the H tyre, coming out in P17

#

L27/70 - NOR is the last car to stop and comes out in traffic down in P10 - McLaren may have put the current WDC leader in quite a conundrum here!

#

L30/70 - Race Standings

#

HAM has taken the race lead after the first set of stops, but the overall race is perhaps still in PIA's favour factoring in tyre condition - LAW is tracking for a points finish in P7 currently, but there's a large train forming behind him

#

L31/70 - ALO replicates ALB's move from earlier to take P7 from LAW at T1 - some great driving on display today

#

LEC pushes him off circuit later in the lap and NOR moves by as well - LAW shuffles down to P10

#

L36/70 - Further back, HUL is pushing hard as some pit for their second stops through the order - he's currently in P12 after getting POU under braking into T1

limber patio
#

L41/70 - LAW stops for the H tyre to go to the end and comes out in P15, with many yet to stop again ahead of him

#

L44/70 - GAS uses his fresher M compound to get by HUL for P7

#

L48/70 - HUL is really starting to struggle on those H tyres, now down to P11 with ALB, ALO and now LEC passing in the last 5 laps

#

L50/70 - HAM stops a third time onto the H tyre to go to the end - interestingly, it looks like a lot of the field may follow suit with a third stop due to the amount of degradation we're seeing today (both our cars will stick with a two stop strategy though)

#

L55/70 - HUL comes in for his second stop, switching onto the S compound to push to the end - he rejoins in P15

#

L55/70 - Race Standings

#

PIA has a commanding lead, with the two-stop working nicely for the Australian - NOR is charging hard for a podium on the new S tyre on the alternative three-stop
LAW appears on track to score points today, though it looks like a tough fight ahead with the cars behind on newer and softer tyres

#

L58/70 - GAS on the S tyre is simply too fast for LAW and takes P8 after ALO and SAI stop ahead

#

L59/70 - HUL is now in the points, getting by BEA at T1 for P11

#

ALB has also gotten by LAW for P9

#

L64/70 - HUL is now in DRS range of LAW - a perhaps dissapointing race from the Kiwi today considering where both cars started

#

With ALO closing in behind, team orders are issued to let HUL through on the faster compound

#

L66/70 - Top 10 Tyre Strategy

#

An interesting mix of strategy today, with multiple approaches proving effective on navigating the traffic here in Hungary

#

L69/70 - RUS has closed down on VER in P2 to get within DRS range, but the laps are running out quickly!

#

L70/70 - RUS GETS IT DONE FOR P2! A huge late move on the brakes at T1 pays off for the Brit on the final lap

Team Report

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P10 (Started P14)
"Finishing in the points was the goal today, and we accomplished it through some good race pace and strategy - a solid drive from Nico."

#

Liam Lawson - P11 (Started P6)
"Admittedly, it was a bit disappointing to come away with only one point after starting in P6 - Liam's pace as actually quite decent, so we perhaps misjudged the strategy today and went purely on delta rather than reading the race around us."

#

Race Notes - Competitor Review

  • A big result for Piastri and encouragement for us given him moving across next season - a commanding weekend all round.
  • The WDC is shaping up to be Norris vs Verstappen, with the defending champion clawing back more points this weekend to move ahead of an inconsistent Leclerc back into P2. It may not be enough though, with Norris still firmly the favourite as we go under ten races to go thanks to a 21 pont lead.
  • Alpine seemed to have turned a corner in car development and appear to be the leading midfield car alongside Racing Bulls, with Gasly very strong and Colapinto on track for sizeable points before his early crash.
  • Whilst Ricciardo ultimately came home with no points, it was overshadowed by a disaster of a weekend from Bottas who made up no positions at all during the race to finish P19 despite Russell finishing P2. Inside sources believe this could very well be his last race for Mercedes, with junior starlet and current F2 leader Kimi Antonelli reported to be given the seat until the end of the season to bed himself into the team for 2026.
#

Championship Standings: Race 12/21

#

Breaking News

#

The dominos continue to fall in the paddock, with Kimi Antonelli replacing Valtteri Bottas effective immediately for the remaining races of 2025 and Daniel Ricciardo stepping away from F1 at the end of the season!
Mercedes have officially axed Bottas after Hungary, with many believing it to be the final straw in a season of poor performances. The writing has been on the wall for the 35 year-old Finn for some time though, who was signed as more of a stopgap for Antonelli to be given another year to develop in F2 before stepping into the second seat. However, due to the young Italian's exceptional performances in F2 this season, Mercedes have taken the option to put him into the seat earlier than planned to allow 18 year-old Antonelli time to settle in before the 2026 season, leaving Bottas sidelined as a reserve driver for the remaining nine races this year. Despite a highly challenging season, Bottas has shown flickers of the ability he displayed last season at Sauber, particularly in Monaco where he finished P4 - it is believed he is still rated by teams in the driver market due to his experience, and could perhaps be a dark horse to return to the grid in 2026 should movement occur due to the open second seat at McLaren. All eyes will be on Antonelli when we return to racing after the mid-year break in the Netherlands, who will become one of the youngest drivers ever to compete at the pinnacle of motorsport.

#

Elsewhere, another veteran of the sport has fallen under sustained and highly-publicised pressure - Daniel Ricciardo will retire at the end of this season to end his 15 year career in F1. The 35 year-old Australian accomplished a fairytale return to Red Bull for 2025 after an impressive 2024 at sister team Racing Bulls, beating then-teammate Yuki Tsunoda to the promotion. However, 2025 has proven to be a nightmare season for Ricciardo, incredibly only finishing in the points in 5/12 races with four DNFs (the most of any driver on the grid) - he is currently on equal points with a highly-impressive Tsunoda, with teammate Max Verstappen scoring more than three times as many points as Ricciardo thus far. Many believed Ricciardo and Tsunoda would swap seats before the end of the season with Red Bull's history of aggressive driver decisions, but this announcement perhaps explains why this move has not eventuated - Red Bull are in relative no-mans land in the WCC in P3, so the decision appears to have been made to let Ricciardo bow out gracefully and Tsunoda to step in come 2026. Whilst there was some surprise that the 8-time winner has decided to step away completely, it is on brand with the ethos of his return to the sport in 2023 - his sole motivation was to reclaim a seat at Red Bull, with the Australian publicly stating he was not interested in driving towards the back of the field for the sake of staying in the sport.

#

Round 13: Netherlands

#

After nearly a month for the mid-season break, we're back in business at Zandvoort. Internally, we've pivoted away from developing the car this season to put full focus on 2026 with the major regulation change and have been using all our CFD/WTR on this research. As a result, it's unlikely there will be any significant car upgrades for the rest of the season, as we're quite confident in keeping P5 in the WCC thanks to our 61 point lead over Racing Bulls currently. However, it's unlikely this approach is being adopted by the rest of the grid, so this weekend could be the start of some painful rounds for us with other teams bringing upgrades. It is looking like a wet weekend though from the forecast, so the mixed conditions might represent an opportunity for us to capitalise on. Mick Schumacher also will make his on-track debut for Porsche this weekend, replacing Liam in FP1.

#

Qualifying

#

Q1: Traffic is always an issue at Zandvoort for qualifying and today is no different - HUL is knocked out in P18 after several of his runs were compromised by traffic and dirty air. RUS also goes out in P17 with the same issues, whilst RIC also exits early with Red Bull's decision to replace multiple ICE components in that car resulting in 10 grid places of penalties for the race.

#

Q2: The rain intensified from Q1, with the worsening conditions catching out several drivers including wet weather specialist VER. Ultimately, we lacked the pace to progress with LAW exiting in P14 - ANT impresses in his first qualifying session to go through to Q3 in P7.

Nico Hulkenberg - P18 (+0.140 from Q2)
"Frustrating day on track today with the traffic never letting Nico set a representative lap - it's going to be a very difficult ask to score points tomorrow given no DRS with the expected rain at a circuit where it's already hard to pass.

#

Liam Lawson - P14 (+0.136 from Q3)
"Despite getting better fortune with the traffic, the pace just wasn't there today - this could be the price we pay for a lack of upgrades here this weekend.

*DRU (P16) and RIC (P22) have taken 10-place grid penalties after changing engine components overnight/exceeding the season limit

#

Qualifying Notes - Competitor Review

  • It's all to play for at the front for Leclerc, who realistically needs a win to keep himself in WDC contention - the pair of Norris and Piastri will be hard to keep at bay across a race distance.
  • Another standout performance from Tsunoda in P5, who continues to prove why it should be a mere formality for him to take the second Red Bull seat in 2026.
  • Speaking of which, Red Bull appear to be struggling here at Zandvoort this weekend with Verstappen only able to manage P6 in his home race despite the rainy conditions usually favouring the four-time champion. It's a worrying omen for the backend of the season if he is to mount another serious title challenge.
  • It was also an impressive session for rookies on the grid, with Bearman notably in P7 as well as Antonelli starting P8 in his first ever start in F1.

Race

#

Race Strategy: With a wet race forecasted from start to finish, we've gone for an aggressive two-stop to try and work our way through the field with the high degradation nature of the circuit.

#

L1/72 - It's lights out and away we go here in Zandvoort!

#

And an incident immediately into T1! OCO locks up under braking and takes GAS with him - GAS is able to rejoin in P14, whilst OCO slips all the way down to P22

#

⚠️ OCO gets a 5 second time penalty for the incident

#

L10/72 - Race Standings

#

No changes in order outside of the T1 incident thus far, with overtaking proving very difficult with no DRS - pit strategy will be critical today

#

L15/72 - The track has been deemed dry enough by the stewards to activate DRS despite it still being damp - this could make the race more interesting

#

L17/72 - The rain has returned and DRS is disabled again

#

L18/72 - RUS and RIC have opted to stop early and attempt the undercut - we're still a long way out from our scheduled first stop so we're not really in a position to respond

#

L23/72 - With more midfield competitors pitting the lap prior, LAW pits to cover the undercut - critically, he rejoins ahead of COL

#

L24/72 - Big collision between HAM and HAD! The Brit misjudges his move down the inside and there's significant contact between the two cars, with both now carrying damage - HAD loses out massively re-joining the track and is now running in P13

#

There's no further action from the stewards on the collision - HAM will consider himself very lucky for escaping a penalty there

#

L25/72 - The undercut has worked to perfection for LAW, with ALB coming out behind the Kiwi after his first stop!

#

HUL also pits after going long in the first stint, emerging in P17

#

L33/72 - HUL converts a move on POU for P16 into the final banked turn

#

L35/72 - Race Standings

#

After the first round of stops at the halfway mark of this race, its NOR leading after a smart undercut on LEC who is managing a mild powertrain issue - VER and SAI are battling more severe engine problems currently as the race progresses. LAW has benefitted from our strategy play thus far in P11, with HUL still down in P16 and likely out of contention for the points today. Notably, RUS has moved from P16 all the way up to P7 currently with some incredible driving - he will have to manage that tyre set longer than the rest of the grid with that early stop though.

#

L37/72 - HUL sends it down the inside of GAS at T1 for P15 - a great piece of racecraft

#

L48/72 - It's another move down into T1, this time on SAI for HUL to take P12!

#

Further back, COL spins in a huge moment - the car is undamaged though and he re-joins

#

L50/72 - HUL stops for his final set of intermediate tyres but there's an issue getting the rear left off, resulting in a 4.681s stop! Painful after a great drive in his second stint

#

L52/72 - LAW boxes two laps later and comes out in P12, with ALB and GAS ahead yet to stop and within a pitstop delta

#

BEA ahead has been held up by GAS - this could be a chance for LAW

#

L53/72 - HUGE MOVE FROM LAW AND HE GETS IT DOWN ON BEA!

#

L56/72 - Race Standings

#

With ALB the last to pit for a second time, the order for the run to the flag is apparent - LAW is sitting comfortably in P9, whilst HUL is just outside the points but closing in on RIC who has significantly more worn tyres ahead

#

L71/72 - HUL is all over RIC and fighting for that final point, with the Red Bull struggling significantly with tyre wear - he's given the message from the pit wall to give it absolutely everything!

#

L72/72 - HE GETS IT DONE! HUL with a late move into T1 for yet another time in this race to move up into P11 - incredible driving on the last lap!

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P11 (Started P17)
"Much like in Hungary, finishing in the points was the ambition from where we started today and Nico made it happen on the very last lap. It's critical for us to maximise every point possible in the backend of this season to hold onto P5 in the WCC, so results like these are important."

#

Liam Lawson - P9 (Started P14)
"A really good race from Liam today - P9 was realistically the maximum of what we could've accomplished in this race, so we're very happy with his performance."

#

Race Notes - Competitor Review

  • The perfect way to hit back for Norris to take home 26 points from this weekend and move more than a race win of points away from Leclerc in P2.
  • Conversely, it was a horror weekend for Verstappen at his home round, with car trouble in the race on top of a lack of pure pace - time is quickly slipping away for the Dutchman to make it five in a row.
  • Another huge performance from Tsunoda to maintain P5 for Racing Bulls, as well as Russell putting in a DOTD-winning performance to come from P16 to finish P6.
  • Antonelli drove a quiet race but finished where he started to score his first points in F1 in P8 - a solid start for the newest face on the grid and a step forward from Bottas' previous performances.
  • Although he's gone under the radar somewhat, Drugovich is having a consistently terrible season at Aston Martin and continued the trend this weekend - surely the team will be looking elsewhere for a driver next season?

Round 14: Italy

#

After just one week, we're off to the last race in Europe for 2025 at Monza - one of the most high-speed performance orientated tracks on the calendar. Given our development has stalled with focus on 2026, this could be a blessing for us - our car remains strong in low speed cornering comparative to our midfield competitors. With the battle for P5 in the WCC seeming to be between us and Racing Bulls, this weekend will be critical with both TSU and HAD set to take grid penalties for exceeding powertrain components.

#

Qualifying

#

Q1: Shock here in the opening session with HAM only managing P19! He's caught in traffic on both runs with Ferrari failing to release him into good track position and the local fans are devastated - RIC also continues his woes and is eliminated in P16

#

Q2:: The shocks continue as both Mercedes cars fail to make it into Q3 despite showing such good pace in practice! OCO delivers a huge lap after the flag to knock ANT out into P11 at the youngsters home race, whilst RUS is caught out by a yellow flag caused by BOR on his final lap - his earlier only good enough for P14 with the track ramping up quickly here. Critically though, both HUL and LAW are through to Q3 in P5/P6, with both drivers showing really good pace here!

LANDO NORRIS TAKES POLE IN MONZA! He takes another step towards his first title when it counts, making it four poles for 2025.

Nico Hulkenberg - P4 (+0.322 from Pole)
"Huge session today from Nico to start P4 tomorrow despite our package not being optimal at this stage of the season - qualifying within 0.4s of pole here is a real testament to both the team and the drivers."

#

Liam Lawson- P5 (+0.348 from Pole)
"Similar words for Liam - two cars within the top five here is a huge result and we're excited for what tomorrow brings."

⚠️ TSU (P6), LEC (P8) and HAD (P18) have taken 10-place grid penalties after changing engine components overnight/exceeding the season limit

#

Qualifying Notes - Competitor Review

  • A horror-show performance in qualifying for Ferrari at their home race, with both drivers lining up next to each other in P17/P18 tomorrow after Leclerc is forced to take new engine components after worsening failures during Q3. Whilst the nature of Monza does make it easier to overtake, this could be the beginning of the end for Leclerc's title charge in particular.
  • A vintage performance from Alonso puts him in P6 for tomorrow, proving why he still has much to give for Aston Martin - it's an encouraging result as well for Drugovich in P13 after grid penalties given the Brazilian's struggles this season.
  • Sainz also impressed and will now start P7, with Williams determined to end their recent slump after a strong start to the season.
  • Crucially for us, Tsunoda (P15) and Hadjar (P22) start well down the order thanks to having to take engine components above the regulations - tomorrow is a day to capitalise.
#

Race

#

Race Strategy: The one-stop appears to be the logical option here, with the M-H approach covering the potential for safety cars in the opening stint

#

L1/53 - It's lights out and away we go here in Monza!

#

PIA is forced wide exiting T2 from VER and drops a load of places down into P10 - LAW moves into P3 with HUL P4 behind!

#

L6/53 - HUL is now P3 ahead of LAW after a move into T1 was facilitated by the team, with the German showing better pace in the early stages of this race

#

L10/53 - Race Standings

#

It's a solid start for both our cars, holding P3 and P4 so far - SAI is looking particularly threatening at this stage of the race. ALO seems to be bottlenecking the field behind, with PIA moving back towards the front after that L1 incident.

#

L19/53 - LAW spins at T5 and nearly drops it into the wall! SAI is caught up in avoiding the Kiwi and is unable to overtake - LAW keeps P4 but the tyres are now badly damaged and he's lost significant time to HUL ahead

#

L21/53 - LAW boxes onto the H compound and comes out in P8, with ANT, PIA and ALO jumping him in the undercut - ANT is attempting to make a two-stop work with a M-S-H

#

L23/53 - HUL now boxes onto the H and comes out in P5

#

VER is also reporting a moderate gearbox issue - the Dutchman could be in trouble despite running in P2 currently!

#

L25/53 - Race Standings

#

After the longest first stint of anyone on the M tyre, NOR finally pits and comes out 6.4s clear of VER in P2, with PIA close behind in P3. HUL looks well poised to bring home P4 should the race not throw any surprises into the mix, with the two-stop for ANT not working in his favour unless a safety car comes soon - LAW is also tracking nicely on the back of ALO and within DRS range.

#

L26/53 - HUL gets by ANT for P4, with the Italian struggling on those S tyres

#

L28/53 - LAW also moves by ANT for P6, but loses 3s to ALO ahead in battling - RIC is right on the tail of both of them

#

L28/70 - ⚠️ SAFETY CAR - ANT (RET)

#

Big moment in this race as ANT makes side-on contact with RIC and sustains heavy damage - he's out of his home race!

#

No one pits due to being so early into the H tyre run - ironically, it would've been ideal for ANT to get off those S compounds

#

L33/53 - 🟢 Green flag

#

L33/53 - 🔴 RED FLAG - PIA (RET), HUL (RET) & LAW (RET)

#

THE TWO PORSCHES ARE OUT AFTER THE TEAMMATES COLLIDE!! LAW locks up into T4 and smashes into the back of HUL, who dominoes into PIA ahead and all three cars have huge damage - there's disbelief on the pitwall after what looked like a huge opportunity for big points across both cars! The most idiotic way for our first DNF across either car for the entire season.

#

⚠️ LAW gets a 10 second time penalty for the crash which he will have to serve in grid penalties next race in Baku

#

L35/53 - It's lights out once again here in Monza, with NOR making a great start - RIC is up to P3 after starting this race in P16!

#

VER IS RETIRING! He comes in after the opening lap of the restart with terminal gearbox issues, with the Red Bull mechanics unable to repair the problem in the red flag - a crazy race unfolding here!

#

L38/53 - ALO holds onto P3 for now, but a train is forming for the last step on the podium

#

L40/53 - Race Standings

#

Chaos is continues to unfold today, with ALB getting by ALO for P3 and Williams dreaming of a miraclous podium finish here - the Spaniard is struggling now with engine problems and is falling back rapidly. TSU and HAD have found themselves in P5 and P6, and could close in significantly on us in the WCC if the race continues as is. HAM is also making a fantastic drive back through the field in his first home race for Ferrari and sits P8 currently with 13 laps to go. All of the field bar NOR is also nursing S tyres, with serious questions over if they will make the end currently - this could be a blockbuster finish!

#

L43/53 - HAD is the first to blink and pits for a second set of S tyres - the blistering heat here is destroying this compound and it seems the entire field except NOR will need to box again!

#

L50/53 - Race Standings

#

What a race this is - the strategy is split and many teams seem to be taking a huge risk and staying out! HAD leads those who have pitted in P8 currently, but is closing in at 2-3s a lap over those ahead who are seriously risking punctures.

#

L52/53 - HAD is flying and closing in on RUS for P5, but he may just run out of time to challenge further ahead - ALB in P3 has 6.8s back to HAM and Williams are beginning to believe in what seemed earlier as only a dream!

#

Disaster for SAI in P7 who now has a puncture on the penultimate lap! Horrendous luck continues for him after such a great driver performance today.

#

L53/53 - LEC now has a puncture on the final lap! Heartbreak for the Ferrari fans as he limps home and falls out of the points from P8 - a crushing result in the context of the WDC

#

Nico Hulkenberg - DNF (Started P4) | Liam Lawson - DNF (Started P5)
"To start from P4 and P5 and come home with no points is frustrating enough, but for it to happen because of a crash between our cars is unacceptable - Liam overstepped the line today and the whole team paid the price. We leave not only with a 12 point loss to Racing Bulls, but a huge job to do in rebuilding both cars for Baku, so hopefully we don't have to dip into older components in a season where we're already limited on overall performance."

#

Race Notes - Competitor Review

  • A pivotal weekend for the WDC, with Norris moving over two races clear of both Leclerc (57pts) and Verstappen (66pts) - it's now his championship to lose with only seven rounds remaining.
  • It was opposite ends of the spectrum at Ferrari for their home race, with Hamilton incredibly finishing in P4 after starting in P18 - whilst it was partly due to the timing of the red flag, the 7-time champion drove a very impressive race. Conversely, this may be the race that buried Leclerc's WDC hopes, with a puncture on the last lap compiling a horror weekend for the Monegasque driver.
  • There will be celebrations deep into the evening for Williams, who jump to P7 in the WCC as well as Albon moving up to P12 in the WDC after today's podium finish after a difficult series of rounds as of late.
  • The carnage of the race paid huge dividends for more than just Albon in the midfield runners, with Hadjar coming from last on the grid to finish in P5 thanks to Racing Bulls leading the line to two-stop on the S compound after the red flag. Bortoleto was also very impressive, taking P8 at the flag in a big result for Sauber.

Round 15: Azerbaijan

#

After an extended interlude, we're back for the tailend of the season in Baku - a track that has always delivered on chaos in recent years. With the circuit split between both extreme low/high downforce demands, it could be a fascinating weekend but unfortunately one where we could suffer more compared to Monza. However, the pressure is on after both cars failed to finish in the last round after huge damage, with Liam Lawson also set to take a 5-place grid penalty this weekend due to that incident - we face an upfield battle. Additionally, whilst the extended break between Monza and Baku has meant the team has been able to manufacture up-to-date parts to fit on both cars, we now face pressure with our remaining allocation of engine/gearbox/ERS due to the aforementioned damage.

Qualifying

#

Q1: After a great drive to take P2 last time out, RIC crashes out of Q1 once again in P17 - that second seat at Red Bull continues to raise question marks. HAD also falls at the first hurdle, as well as both Haas/Sauber cars looking well off the pace here this weekend.

#

Q2: A huge shock with NOR only managing P13 - the WDC leader can't string together a competitive lap and is out in Q2! ANT also continues a difficult start to his F1 career at Mercedes and can only manage P16 despite RUS looking very competitive all weekend. LAW is out in P14 and will start this race in P19 barring any other grid penalties, whilst HUL makes it into Q3 by under 0.1s.

#

MAX VERSTAPPEN RETURNS TO POLE IN BAKU! A great lap by the defending champion in a critical moment for the WDC.

#

Leclerc narrowly misses out by under a tenth to also keep his title bid alive, whilst Russell continues his strong form to start P3 tomorrow.

Team Report

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P8 (+0.631 from Pole)
"A solid result considering we haven't been great with pace all weekend, especially on damaged powertrain components due to the crash in Monza. Since our pace hasn't been very competitive in race sims this weekend, we've opted to take a hit with penalties for the race to expand our pool of parts for the backend of the season - Nico will start from P18 tomorrow."

#

Liam Lawson- P14 (+0.273 from Q3)
"A bit of a meek qualifying from Liam which hurts with the grid penalty yet to apply from Monza - P19 tomorrow will make points very tricky."

#

⚠️ LEC (P2) has taken a 5-place grid penalty after changing engine components overnight/exceeding the season limit, while HUL (P8) has a 10-place grid penalty for taking new gearbox and ERS components. LAW (P14) is also penalised 5 grid places as an outstanding penalty from his incident in Monza.

#

Qualifying Notes - Competitor Review

  • McLaren's recent dominance seems to be slightly negated here, with Piastri only managing P4 in Q3 and Norris knocked out in Q2 - it could be a critical race particularly for Verstappen in his pursuit of the WDC. Ferrari's mechanical nightmares continue for this season with Leclerc having to start P7 after replacing components in the powertrain that failed in Monza - given he was set to start from P2, this could be a major chance thrown away to gain ground in the WDC.
  • The fight in the midfield is intense this weekend, with 9 of the 11 teams on the grid represented in Q3. Gasly appears to have an edge over the rest and has shown the pace to run with the top four teams, but it'll be a hard-fought battle in the race from the deltas shown in qualifying.
  • Antonelli will be looking to quickly push his way forward and shake off his recent struggles from P14, with Ricciardo needing to do the same from P15. Qualifying also offers Drugovich a good chance to score his first points of the year, with the under-fire Brazilian the only full-time driver yet to score a point in 2025.

Race

#

Race Strategy: We split the strategy today since both cars start so far back in the hopes at least one pays dividends at a track that usually brings drama - HUL on a more traditional one-stop with his tyre management abilities, while we'll gamble with LAW on a puncher two-stop and hope for a safety car

#

L1/51 - It's lights out and away we go here in Baku!

#

There's immediately contact at T1 between LEC and SAI, with the Ferrari driver dropping down into P9 after aggressive side contact!

#

⚠️ SAI is awarded a 5 second time penalty for the incident

#

L4/51 - LAW gets by OCO into T3 for P17 after a hard-fought battle in the opening laps

#

L5/51 - 🔴 RED FLAG - POU (RET), BOR (RET) & BEA (RET)

#

BAKU DELIVERS EARLY ON AND THE RACE IS HALTED! A huge crash between the two Sauber teammates at the braking point for T3 takes both cars out of this race, as well as BEA who had nowhere to go - incredibly unlucky for the Haas rookie

#

From the strategy side, we keep the same run plans but put LAW onto a less-run set of S compound from qualifying

#

L7/51 - We're away for the second time here in Baku, with VER leading the way from RUS through T1

#

⚠️ BOR gets a 5 second time penalty for the red flag crash, which he will have to serve as a 3-place grid penalty next race

#

L8/51 - LAW is using the tyre advantage well and is up to P15 past ANT and HAD, while HUL is the last car on track in P19

#

Further ahead, NOR is reporting engine problems developing - this could be huge for the WDC!

#

L10/51 - Race Standings

#

VER has maintained control at the restart, but perhaps most notable is TSU pushing up to P3 and keeping pace with RUS with no tyre delta advantage - very impressive thus far from the Racing Bulls driver! PIA is seemingly struggling as well and is down to P7 from a P3 start - LAW is now past DRU for P14 as well. Interestingly, much of the field seems to have abandoned a two-stop strategy to go long on hard tyres for a one-stop - outliers like LAW, GAS and ALB could prove a wildcard depending on how the race pans out from here.

#

L11/51 - LAW with a huge move around the outside of COL at T1 for P13!

#

L14/51 - The race is starting to come back to HUL with those ahead either pitting or suffering from notable tyre deg as he moves past HAD for P15

#

L17/51 - HAD makes contact with the wall while battling with COL and damages his front wing

#

L19/51 - ⚠️ SAFETY CAR - ANT (RET)

#

It's back-to-back DNFs for ANT who makes heavy contact with the wall at T12 - the 18-year-old Italian is enduring a punishing start to his F1 career

#

The incident is perfect timing for LAW to move onto the M compound - we also pit HUL to complete his only stop onto the H tyre as it just fits into our pit window for the strategy

#

L22/51 - 🟢 Green flag

#

L24/51 - HUL makes short work of NOR who is now badly struggling with engine problems - the German moves up to P11, while LAW ahead is pushing on in P9 to stick with LEC

limber patio
#

L28/51 - HUL gets ALB for P10 and is really coming alive on this H compound!

#

TSU in P6 is creating quite the train here and it's unfortunately ruining the two-stop strategy for LAW currently - HUL is right behind him despite the fact the Kiwi is yet to make his final stop

#

L30/51 - Race Standings

#

Passing half way in this GP, we're in a very good position considering where we started - all cars from P4-P7 will have to make another stop which could make the ending very interesting

#

L34/51 - With TSU and RIC taking their second stops ahead, LAW is P6 with HUL P7 close behind and doing an incredible job of keeping pace whilst managing the wear on the H compound

#

L36/51 - LAW now pits for a fresh set of S tyres and comes out in P15 behind TSU, but critically on much fresher tyres than those ahead - he has work to do now

#

L40/51 - LAW is carving through the field and now finds himself in P9 after getting by ALO!

#

Critically out the front, VER has pitted for S tyres with 10 laps to go and now trails PIA by just over +12s who is staying out to the end seemingly on the very worn M compound - can the Dutchman close the gap?

#

L41/51 - Race Standings

#

In all of this chaos, HUL finds himself in P3 and with a sizeable margin behind him! LEC and RUS are charging hard though and it'll be a battle to hold onto the podium spot, but an incredible drive regardless to make the one-stop work when no one else has

#

L42/51 - PIA HAS PITTED! McLaren think better of running the risk and pit the Australian who comes out in P2 and +8s adrift of VER

#

L43/51 - And now HAM pits as well! He's down to P15, with some high-profile teams getting the strategy very wrong today

#

L44/51 - LAW gets by a struggling RUS for P5! Unbelievable scenes here as tyre management seems to be the topic on everyone's mind

#

L45/51 - ⚠️ SAFETY CAR - COL (RET)

#

ANOTHER TWIST IN THE STORY HERE IN BAKU! COL loses the rear end into T1 and is out of this race - will we get a restart though with limited laps remaining?

#

L46/51 - Race Standings

#

Incredibly, many have opted to take on new tyres in the belief there will be a restart, including VER who has surrendered the race lead!! What a wild ending to this race - Baku certainly has delivered today

#

L48/51 It seems we are going to get a restart here as well, with the safety car set to come in this lap...

#

L49/51 - 🟢 Green flag - it's a three-lap dash to the finish!

#

L50/51 - It's an incredibly tight battle for the final step on the podium - DRS is now enabled!

#

Further ahead, VER gets PIA for the race lead after a thrilling battle across multiple corners!

#

L51/51 - LEC MAKES A MISTAKE ON THE LAST LAP AND HUL BREAKS THE DRS - INCREDIBLE SCENES!

#

A ENORMOUS CRASH RIGHT BEFORE THE LINE AND RUS IS OUT!! He makes contact with the inside wall after being left no room from ALO and pinballs between the walls - that car is absolutely destroyed and he goes from P6 to DNF with just meters to go in this race!

Nico Hulkenberg - P3 (Started P17) | Liam Lawson - P5 (Started P18)
"What an absolutely incredible turnaround from Monza! No one could've predicted this, especially after qualifying but we were flawless on both the pit wall and behind the wheel today in the race. Nico drove a perfect one-stop race when no one else could make it work, even holding off Leclerc on S tyres despite being stuck on heavily worn H's at the final SC restart - he truly has proven his calibre this season. Liam also drove a fantastic race to carve his way through the field with some clinical overtakes all the way to P5 - we can be so proud of this weekend as a team."

Race Notes - Competitor Review

  • A weekend to forget for Norris, with his Q2 knockout compounded by engine gremlins in the race - while he still has a 41 point lead over Verstappen in the WDC, he can't afford a repeat of this weekend with six rounds remaining.
  • Conversely, a big weekend for Alonso who moves Aston Martin just 1 point behind Haas in the WCC thanks to a P6 finish. The garage will be slightly down though with Drugovich missing out on his first F1 points finish by less than four-tenths of a second at the line - there are serious question marks over the Brazilian's future at the team for 2026 with Alonso currently outscoring him 32-0.
  • A horror weekend for Mercedes with a double DNF, particularly with Russell having a enormous crash at the last corner of the race from a solid points position - the team must now rebuild that car in time for Singapore. Antonelli also continues to struggle to get momentum after his first three GPs, with Mercedes now 88 points away from Red Bull in the WCC.
  • The topic of strategy was a constant theme today, with no team perhaps getting it as wrong as Racing Bulls - Tsunoda was pitted three times and dropped into traffic multiple times, resulting in him finishing P13 when he was comfortably running in P3 for the first stint of the race. Ferrari also got it wrong today, with Hamilton in particular left out far too long before pitting in the closing laps.

Breaking News

#

The next piece of the puzzle for the 2026 driver line-up has fallen into place, with Liam Lawson re-joining the Red Bull family at Racing Bulls for 2026!
The 23-year-old will join the team on a one-year deal after the signing of Oscar Piastri at Porsche left him without a seat for next season, with the Kiwi returning to the team where he first made his debut in F1 back in 2023 as a Red Bull junior - ironically as a emergency replacement for Daniel Ricciardo whose imminent retirement created this opportunity.
Many in the paddock believe Red Bull consider Lawson to have the potential to work his way into the senior team - after a patchy debut full-time seat last year, he stepped up in 2025 to deliver more frequently across the season and currently sits P10 in the standings after a brilliant performance in Baku (one which is rumoured to have sealed this deal).
However, consistency is still a weak point, particularly in qualifying where he has frequently gone out in Q1 due to not being able to put in a solid lap when it counts - he is down 11-4 in both races and qualifying to current veteran teammate Nico Hulkenberg. Time will ultimately tell if he can deliver on his potential, but many in the paddock consider this to be a deserved outcome for Lawson who has shown he has the credentials to stay on the grid.

#

This announcement also seems to confirm Yuki Tsunoda will step into the second Red Bull seat for 2026 thanks to a spectacular showing this year, with promising rookie Isack Hadjar expected to be resigned for a second season at Racing Bulls alongside Lawson after an impressive start to his F1 career. However, the move perhaps is not yet official due to the vacancy at McLaren caused by Piastri's aforementioned departure - the current constructor's champions are rumoured to be in talks with Tsunoda as well as several other drivers, including ex-Mclaren junior Gabriel Bortoleto who has impressed at Sauber thus far this season.
Alpine are also yet to confirm their second driver for 2026 alongside Pierre Gasly, but it seems it will be Franco Colapinto who has shown improved performances in comparison to Jack Doohan. The same applies at Aston Martin, however, Felipe Drugovich is understood be be under serious pressure to retain his seat as the only full-time driver to not score a point this season. The British team are understood to be considering a range of alternative options, but understandably have a preference for youth due to Fernando Alonso's age which may end up playing in Drugovich's favour - it's up to him now to prove his worth above other raw talents.

Round 16: Singapore

#

After a fortnight break, we're back to racing in Singapore! We do not expect the highs of Baku this weekend, with the circuit suiting a low-speed downforce packages - a current weakness of ours. Qualifying is always critical here, so it will be a fascinating shootout between the drivers come Saturday night.

#

Qualifying

#

Q1: A difficult first season in red continues for HAM who can only manage P19 despite Ferrari showing pace in practice - there's perhaps some fault on the pit wall for how he was released into traffic. Despite impressive performances in Baku, ALO and GAS also go out early.

#

Q2: It's a double exit for HUL (P13) and LAW (P14) - not a surprise after practice with our package simply lacking the pace to break into Q3. ANT is once again unlucky to get bumped right at the death by ALB and will start in P11 tomorrow.

GEORGE RUSSELL PUTS IT ON POLE IN SINGAPORE! What a lap from the Mercedes driver - no one saw that coming!

#

Leclerc will start P2, while Piastri continues to build on his recent form to take P3

#

Team Report

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P13 (+0.436 from Q3) | Liam Lawson - P14 (+0.783 from Q3)
"Not a bad result considering our expectations going into this weekend - Singapore can provide opportunity through incidents, so we're still in a position to be able to score points but it will be difficult. The main focus for tomorrow will be getting both cars through the race cleanly and looking ahead to Austin."

#

Singapore GP Starting Grid

#

⚠️ COL (P12) has taken a 10-place grid penalty for taking new gearbox and engine components above the season limit, while BOR (P18) is also penalised 3 grid places as an outstanding penalty from his incident in Baku.

#

Qualifying Notes - Competitor Review

  • Norris continues to slightly struggle - Verstappen and Leclerc need to execute flawlessly if they are to mount a late challenge and continue to put the pressure on the WDC leader.
  • Tsunoda continues to excel, with the wrestling match between Red Bull and McLaren for the Japanese driver's signature in 2026 well warrented. It's a notable result for Hadjar as well in P8 who is quietly having a very impressive rookie season.
  • Williams appear to have pace this weekend as well on a low-speed downforce circuit after a lean period, and Sainz in particular will be desperate to end his streak of misfortune and score points tomorrow.
#

Race

#

Race Strategy: It's almost certainly going to be a two-stop for the whole field today - the M-H-M looks to be an obvious choice for those who have two sets available, but we also want to explore going long with HUL and onto the S to finish.

#

L1/62 - It's lights out and away we go here in Singapore!

#

L3/62 - COL dives down the inside of BOR and forces him into the wall, with the Brazilian forced to retire in back-to-back races due to the damage!

#

⚠️ COL is awarded a 5 second time penalty for the incident

#

L6/62 - The field has begun to spread out, with LAW and HUL settling into P12/P13 respectively

#

L10/62 - Race Standings

#

A solid start from RUS who holds onto the lead, but all of the top five are in DRS range - this is shaping up to be a fascinating race

#

L11/62 - COL spins and makes contact with the barrier at T14 - he gets it going again though and continues, a disaster start for the Argentinian here

#

L16/62 - RUS and PIA blink first to pit, with the McLaren team jumping RUS with a rapid stop!

#

L18/62 - LAW is in for his first stop, moving onto the H compound

#

L20/62 - HUL comes in for a set of H's as well after going long on the M - it's a slow stop though (3.382s) and he comes out in P17

#

L20/62 - Race Standings

#

After the first cycle of stops, there's a bit of shuffling - LAW is still P12 thanks to undercutting SAI and ANT, with HAM and OCO ahead stopping very early

#

L24/62 - 🔴 RED FLAG - RIC (RET) & HAD (RET)

#

IT'S HAPPENED AGAIN! The reverse of Canada, this time RIC locking up and slamming into the back of HAD - they're both out and we have yet another red flag!

#

We've chosen to take a gamble with LAW and put him onto a M-M-S strategy - it'll require some conservation but could pay dividends later in the race

#

L26/62 - It's lights out for the second time here in Singapore and it's chaos at the start! VER makes an incredible launch and is now leading, while PIA falters and is now down to P4 - NOR falls even further and is now P9, with OCO an incredible P5!

#

In all of the chaos, HUL has incredibly gone from P15 to P10!

#

⚠️ The stewards have announced RIC will recieve a 3-place grid penalty for the next race for the incident with HAD

#

L35/62 - An incredible effort from ALB who is still leading this midfield pack in P7, despite on quickly-degrading S tyres - HUL remains in P10, as does LAW in P12

#

L39/62 - ALB's defence finally fails, with first SAI/NOR passing and now HUL for P9

#

L40/62 - Race Standings

#

VER hasn't managed to pull away on the M tyre despite the theoretical delta in performance - RUS is sticking with him and may well be in the box seat to win this race! Elsewhere, the highlight is perhaps OCO who is maintaining P5 and looks very strong.

#

L50/62 - HUL boxes for S tyres, coming out in P17 but with cars ahead yet to stop and a tyre delta advantage

#

L51/62 - LAW stops the following lap, coming out in P18 - the long run conserving the M compound has not worked in our favour today

#

It goes even worse for SAI though, resulting in LAW jumping him in the lane after a slow stop at Williams

#

L52/62 - Race Standings

#

With 10 laps to go, it's a thrilling prospect! RUS and NOR appear to be trying to go extremely long on the H tyre, but with LEC, VER and PIA quickly closing in, it looks perhaps the worse strategy today. Our own strategy plays have not played out as well as we would've liked, with a lot of work to be done by our drivers if we're to score points today still.

#

L56/62 - WHAT HAVE WE JUST WITNESSED FROM HUL!! In the space of one lap, he works his way through the midfield battle pack from P13 to P10 - simply incredible driving from the German!

#

Further forward, LEC has closed in to NOR in P2 but has seemingly used up much of his tyre advantage to do so - RUS is still -6.8s ahead in P1 and suddenly looks like he may take out the win!

#

L57/62 - ANT is yet to stop a second time and it seems Mercedes believe both their drivers can execute a one-stop race, but the teenaged prodigy seems to be struggling a lot in P8 - HUL is closing in

#

L58/62 - Puncture for ANT just before the end of the lap! Mercedes are forced to box him and he comes out in P18, such cruel luck continues for the rookie

#

L59/62 - HUL and LAW are now P9/P10 and chasing down OCO, but the laps are quickly ticking down

#

L61/62 - OCO responds by clearing the limping ALB for P8, with the Williams driver battling ERS issues late in this race!

#

And there's a yellow flag just after T17 - the Alpine of GAS is slowing and bursts into flames!

#

L62/62 - HUL GOES DOWN THE INSIDE INTO T1 FOR P8! Huge move and he makes it stick - what a performance!

#

⚠️ SAFETY CAR - GAS (RET)

#

Seconds later, GAS is unable to make it back to the pits and the race directors are forced to bring out the safety car for the last lap - what a dramatic ending!

Race Results

#

Team Report

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P9 (Started P12) | Liam Lawson - P10 (Started P13)
"A solid performance to bring home points on a track we thought would be a real struggle for us - we took advantage of the way the race unfolded and extend our lead in the WCC, so definitely a positive weekend."

#

Race Notes - Competitor Review

  • After the disappointment in Baku, it was a critical rebound weekend for Norris - despite starting behind both Verstappen and Leclerc, he has extended his lead in the WDC to 47 points with just five rounds remaining and surely has the title within his grasp.
  • An excellent drive from P14 secures P7 at the flag for Ocon, with Haas now just four points away from Alpine in the WCC. It could've been even better for the American team with Bearman nearly making the one-stop work, with the rookie dropping out of the points with a late pitstop.
  • Can it get any worse for Ricciardo at the moment? The Australian now has seven DNF's this season after crashing into the sister team car of Hadjar (more than double anyone else on the grid) - retirement may seem like a relief for him after this season.

Round 17: Austin

#

The tail-end of the season is truly upon us as we return to North America in Austin - a more balanced circuit where tyre management can provide critical with the hot conditions. Most notably, it's a return to the Sprint weekend format, with big points across all the sessions available to those who maximise it here.

#

Sprint Qualifying

#

RUSSELL CONTINUES HIS HOT STREAK AND TAKES SPRINT POLE! He's in a rich vein of form currently and delivers on his final push lap in SQ3

#

Verstappen just misses out in a critical weekend for his WDC hopes, whilst Hamilton puts in a solid lap to start the Sprint in P3

#

Sprint Qualifying Top 10

#

Team Report

#

**Nico Hulkenberg - P6 (+0.813 from Pole) | Liam Lawson - P17 (+0.014 from SQ2) **
"A great lap from Nico in a session where top drivers made errors on their only lap for SQ3, especially considering the car performance in comparison to the grid at this point of the season. Liam unfortunately was just pipped at the death in SQ1, so we'll turn our focus to getting through the Sprint cleanly for qualifying later."

#

Austin Sprint Starting Grid

#

L1/19 - It's lights out and away we go! The entire field opts to start on the M compound given the heat today here in Austin

#

⚠️ SAFETY CAR - LAW (RET) & POU (RET)

#

A huge crash at T1 immediately, with POU slamming into the back of LAW - both cars are out with huge damage! This will make qualifying tricky depending on what components are damaged, horror start for us with LAW

#

⚠️ The stewards have announced POU will receive a 5-place grid penalty for full-length race this weekend after that incident

#

L5/19 - 🟢 Green flag

#

L10/19 - Several cars including HAM, RIC & LEC have all made a pit-stop onto a new M tyre with the deg so high here - will the delta be enough to make their way back through the field though?

#

L15/19 - TSU makes contact with COL into T11 and both cars take significant damage! They're both coming into the pits to fix what they can to continue here

#

⚠️ The stewards have announced TSU has received a 5 second penalty for the crash, which he serves in his stop

#

L19/19 - Unbelievable scenes as HUL runs out of fuel just meters away from the line after holding onto P6 for so much of this Sprint! It's a double DNF for us, amateur-hour mistakes

Sprint Notes - Competitor Review

  • Ferrari strike again with strategical blunders, with both Hamilton and Leclerc throwing away points to attempt a one-stop in a Sprint. Even more bizarrely, nearly half the grid suffered the same fate trying to copy, such as Ricciardo and Colapinto.
  • A big result for Antonelli who consolidates his Sprint qualifying to finish P4 - that'll be a real shot of confidence for the youngster after a hard introduction to the category.
  • Williams show great pace to move up from SQ1 knockouts to points in the Sprint with Albon, as well as Bearman showing notable pace for Haas to finish P6.
#

Qualifying

#

Q1: Shock here as both Ferrari's go out in Q1!! Crazy scenes after the team elected to not send both HAM (P21) and LEC (P22) out again for a final run, with the track evolution proving to be extreme and both cars will start at the back of the grid for tomorrow's race - can their strategy team get any worse at this point? HUL also struggles in traffic for his final run and is knocked out in P20 in a rare underwhelming performance in qualifying for the German. It's proving to be a very tight field this weekend in particular, with under a second separating P1-16!

#

Q2: More surprises here as both ANT (P11) and RUS (P12) go out in Q2! Traffic is proving to be a real issue here at Austin, with both cars being held up on their final runs despite appearing to be the quickest car here in both Sprint qualifying and the Sprint itself - lots of work for the Silver Arrows awaits them tomorrow. LAW is also just short of raw pace and can only manage P15

#

POLE FOR LANDO NORRIS IN AUSTIN! He strikes when it counts with a flawless lap - he's really proving his WDC credentials here this weekend so far.

#

It's an all-papaya front row with Piastri in P2, while Verstappen keeps himself in the hunt in P3

#

Qualifying Top 10

#

Team Report

#

**Nico Hulkenberg - P20 (+0.214 from Q2) | Liam Lawson - P15 (+0.798 from Q3) **
"A hard session overall - with the field so close at this point in the season, our lack of car development is really starting to hurt us. We'll try to stay out of trouble and see where we land tomorrow."

#

Austin GP Starting Grid

#

⚠️ VER (P3) has taken a 10-place grid penalty for taking engine components above the season limit, while RIC (P6) is penalised 3 grid places as an outstanding penalty from his incident in Singapore. POU (P14) is also handed a 5-place grid penalty for his crash with LAW in the earlier Sprint this weekend.

#

Qualifying Notes - Competitor Review

  • A huge opportunity for midfield runners with big teams suffering errors and penalties here - TSU, OCO and SAI in particular are in box-office seats to secure good points today.
  • On the subject of midfield runners, Williams are displaying genuine pace this weekend across both cars - double points here would help close the gap to Racing Bulls for P6 in the WCC.
  • All eyes will be on VER as he has to charge through the field with a new power unit to keep his WDC hopes alive this weekend - it'll be full attack from the Dutchman.
#

Race

#

Race Strategy: With both our cars lacking raw pace, we need to take risks - it'll be an attempt to make the M compound go long with HUL, while an aggressive three-stop with LAW relies on some safety car intervention throughout the race (a solid possibility since Austin has a 67% safety car risk).

#

L1/56 - It's lights out and away we go in Austin!

#

L5/56 - Race Standings

#

A solid start for both our drivers who maintain position - out front, NOR is vanishing into the distance, with some drivers leaning very hard on their soft tyres in this first phase of the race to gain track position.

#

L7/56 - A clinical move into the penultimate corner from LAW for P13 on BOR

#

BEA and ANT come together later in the lap, with both cars sustaining minor damage - ANT feels he was turned into!

#

⚠️ The stewards have announced BEA has received a 5 second penalty for the incident, which he'll have to serve in the next stop

#

L10/56 - ANT pits and takes a new front wing, coming out in P22 but with pace to use in clean air - the team have told him to put his head down and push

#

L14/56 - LAW is in for new M compound, with the team pulling off a quick stop (2.357s) to get him back out in P19 as the field cycles through their first stops

#

L18/56 - HUL follows suit, coming out in P21 - critically, it seems much of the field is going for a three-stop race compared to our two-stop

#

L19/56 - There's a wheelgun problem at Williams for SAI! He drops from P3 before stopping down to P13, losing over 10s in the stop!

#

L20/56 - Race Standings

#

With all the grid now stopped once, NOR still leads comfortably - RUS and VER are making great progress through the field, as is LEC who is up to P10 from P22!

#

L21/56 - A great move from LAW into T12 on ANT for P12!

#

L24/56 - A wild sequence, with BEA making contact with COL onto the finish line and barely staying on the road - the ripple effect gives HUL a chance to make a move on both of them, but BOR pushes him off-track and DRU gets by at T1! Aggressive racing out there today, especially from BEA

#

L29/56 - A DRS train has formed from P14-P22, with HUL fighting away in the middle of it currently

#

L31/56 - LAW pits onto S tyres from P9, but we can't jump the aforementioned DRS train - he joins at the back of it in P21 and we now have to hope the cars ahead box soon to not kill our tyre delta

#

L34/56 - HUL has done a great job to move to the front of the train in P11 - further back in shot, LAW is carving forward with his tyre delta in P15

#

L39/56 - HUL is instructed to let LAW through, with the Kiwi lapping over 1s a lap faster currently

#

L41/56 - Race Standings

#

15 laps from the finish and it's still tightly contested out there - NOR has a commanding lead, but the places behind are far from settled. RUS is yet to stop, but could still be a threat for the podium with PIA nursing a worsening gearbox issue. ALB is also battling significant car problems currently in P6, with HAD and LEC closing in as the laps tick on. LAW and HUL are well positioned to fight for the last points, but with another stop yet to go, it will be a hard charge to the finish to get any points out of today's race.

#

HUL pits later that lap, coming out in P17 but on fresh M compound compared to the worn H's around him

#

L42/56 - LAW now makes his final stop for fresh M's as well, coming out in P15

#

L46/56 - LAW gets it done on COL for P13!

#

L49/56 - He replicates it three laps later on ANT for P12! HAM is really struggling on worn H tyres ahead in P10 and is under attack from RIC, with the pair under 7s up the road - points could still be possible today

#

L51/56 - HAM is forced to stop and LAW is in the points in P11!

#

RIC's gearbox issues worsen and LAW gets by him into T12 later in the same lap - a fantastic display of driving from the Kiwi today

#

L53/56 - HUL goes deep on ANT for P12, but he can't pull it up and goes off - he doesn't lose track position, but the tyres are ruined and his chances of points are over for today

#

L55/56 - Puncture for RIC! He truly cannot catch a break and the Australian drops out of the points to ANT

Team Report

#

Nico Hulkenberg - P12 (Started P20) | Liam Lawson - P10 (Started P14)
"Considering the pace limitations we had throughout this weekend, bringing points away from this race today is something we can be pleased with, especially for Liam after the major damage that car sustained on Saturday in the Sprint. It's promising signs as a team heading into the final four races, with P5 in the WCC still on track as we focus on 2026."

#

Race Notes - Competitor Review

  • Mercedes seem to have well and truly solved their issues from earlier in the season and are proving to be a threat at all types of tracks in the backend of the year - they could be the dark horse of the grid heading into next season, especially with Antonelli beginning to settle in and record some solid results.
  • Despite his WDC realistically over, Leclerc showed once again why he's one of the best on the grid with a DOTD charge from P22 to P6 - there has to be questions internally at Ferrari about the management of the team if they are to properly challenge for a title over a season.
  • After such a great qualifying with both cars in Q3, Haas delivered a disasterclass here at their home race. Ocon finishing P21 despite starting P4 was particularly confusing, with the three-stop strategy continually placing the Frenchman in traffic after they left him out on a very long first stint on the S tyre.
  • Albon also deserves credit to bring home P5 despite battling car issues - with many predicting Sainz to best him at the start of the year, the Thai driver has consistently lead the way for Williams this season and is reaping the rewards.

Round 18: Mexico

#

With just a week break, we're in Mexico City with temperatures set to be high once again despite rain on Friday. The track characteristics here could prove challenging for our current weaknesses, namely the balance between top speed and medium-speed cornering. Mick Schumacher also returns for his second FP1 session of the season, with Nico Hulkenberg set to watch from the pitwall.

#

Qualifying

#

Q1: Both LAW (P16) and HUL (P20) exit in Q1 for the first time this season - the pace simply not there for progression today

#

Q2: HAM once again is on the receiving end of bad luck, failing to move through in P12 despite setting a time good enough for P3 in Q1 - the Brit is caught up in traffic on his last run and will have work to do tomorrow

Qualifying Notes - Competitor Review

  • A weaker session for Mercedes compared to the last few races, with the cars seemingly not attuned to the circuit here - Antonelli will be happy to be closer to his teammate though.
  • The highlight of the session was absolutely Gasly putting his Alpine into P4 after only managing P18 last weekend! He delivered an incredible lap when it counted after just squeezing into Q3 - with Haas just one point away from Alpine in the WCC, it could be a critical lap in the context of the season.
  • Hadjar and Bearman also impress to reach Q3, with their experienced teammates Tsunoda and Ocon failing to escape Q1.

Race

#

Race Strategy: The hot conditions for today mean a two-stop seems to be the only viable strategy, with the recycling of used medium compounds the quickest way on paper. We'll aim to split the timing of the hard tyre between HUL and LAW in case of safety car interventions.

#

L1/71 - It's lights out and away we go here in Mexico City!

#

🔴 RED FLAG - HAD (RET), SAI (RET) & ALO (RET)

#

Carnage at the end of the opening lap! HAD and SAI come together into T16, with ALO caught up in the crash - the track is blocked and we'll have another grid restart!

#

L4/71 - We're away again here and VER leads commandingly again into T1

#

L5/71 - LAW makes an brave move on BEA around the outside - he's up to P10 already!

#

Further ahead, GAS has used the soft tyre advantage to get by both NOR and PIA for P2!

#

L7/71 - It's now P8 for LAW after an aggressive move at the T1-T3 complex on ANT - the Italian is forced off the road and is not happy with that one

#

L9/71 - Make that P7 for LAW after a rare error from NOR at T4 - he rejoins in P9

#

L15/71 - Race Standings

#

An interesting race unfolding here - VER is in a commanding position, but it's all to play for behind. GAS remains in P2 after an excellent first stint defending PIA, with LAW and DRU also putting in solid first stints to be in the points. The hot conditions appear to be taking their toll already, with ANT fighting a gaerbox issue and NOR/BEA/ALB also nursing minor faults - COL has also suffered front wing damage from an earlier collision with ALB.

#

L19/71 - After 10 laps of pressure, NOR finally gets by LAW for P5 as those ahead take their first stops - the hard tyres appear to have good performance across a stint relative to mediums/softs today

limber patio
#

L22/71 - Both our cars come in to box, but it's a slow stop for LAW (4.503s) and HUL is forced to wait - they slot back in P13 and P15

#

L31/71 - LAW is conserving on the hard tyres and loses position to ALB for P13 - he's instructed to let HUL through on the medium tyre as well and does so

#

L35/71 - Race Standings

#

VER still leads, but is developing a moderate power unit issue - the team at Red Bull look concerned with still half the race to go, despite a +13.5s gap to NOR in P2 who still is yet to stop outside of the red flag stoppage. GAS is showing good race pace to back up his P4 start, while the fight at the tail end of the points remains hotly contested.

#

L42/71 - HUL makes his second stop onto the hard tyre to close out the race, rejoining in P15

#

L45/71 - HAM and DRU come together in T2 in the battle for P6 - HAM comes out on top, but both cars have minor sidepod damage as a result

#

On the same lap, ANT is forced to retire with critical component issues - another hard weekend for the youngster

#

L49/71 - PIA locks up badly at T4, he may have damaged those hard tyres significantly in that mistake

#

L54/71 - After being caught by HUL, LAW boxes onto the medium tyre - he comes out in P17 after a difficult stint on the hard tyre

#

L56/71 - Race Standings

#

With all of the field completed their planned stops, VER leads from NOR - the Red Bull is seemingly holding up with those mechanical issues. PIA is at serious risk of having to stop again on flat-stopped hard compounds, with LEC closing at a very rapid rate.

#

L58/71 - McLaren decide to pit PIA to minimise risk - the Australian comes out in P8 and will charge hard to the end on soft tyres

UNBELIEVABLE SCENES AS THE LEADING RED BULL BURSTS INTO FLAMES AND STOPS JUST ONE LAP FROM THE FINISH! He's heartbroken and has every right to be - what cruel luck here in Mexico today after he led every lap today

#

More critically, this means NOR in P2 is going to win this race! A crazy moment in the WDC that could seal it for the McLaren man - he goes from on the cusp of finishing behind LEC in P3 to taking the top step here, a theoretical 35-point swing!

Team Report

**Nico Hulkenberg - P9 (Started P20) | Liam Lawson - P11 **(Started P17)
"A similar result to Austin - the team can be really proud of our race management, with a double points finish this weekend after such a tough qualifying. We're really encouraged by the progress we're making back at the factory for 2026, so still consolidating points despite no focus on this season is very encouraging across the whole team."

Race Notes - Competitor Review

  • Another mechanical issue for Verstappen has all but wrapped up the WDC for Norris - the Brit can seal it mathematically in Brazil, but he can start celebrating what will be his first world championship after this weekend.
  • Gasly puts in a DOTD-winning drive to finish P5 and move himself into P12 in the WDC, an incredible effort considering the performance of the Alpine for much of the season.
  • Tsunoda also continues to excel at Racing Bulls, making up 11 positions during the race after a difficult qualifying - the Red Bull seat for 2026 seems to be a certainty for the Japanese driver.
  • The mystery at Haas continues for their deficit between qualifying and race pace, with Bearman slipping away from the points once again today - many suggest both drivers are struggling with the increased tyre wear on the car in it's current state.

Local fans have confirmation ahead of the Brazilian GP that both their stars will return next season - Gabriel Bortoleto makes the step up to McLaren and Felipe Drugovich retains his seat at Aston Martin for 2026!
After intense speculation around who would fill Oscar Piastri's seat for next season, it's the ex-McLaren junior who will complete a dream homecoming, fending off competition such as the highly-impressive Yuki Tsunoda. The 21-year-old will move from last-placed Sauber into what will be the defending teams and driver's championship-winning outfit in what is sure to be one of the most high-pressure appointments in recent history, but the Brazilian has shown he has the aptitude to excel. After winning F3 in 2023 and an impressive 2024 F2 season, Bortoleto has delivered a quietly-impressive season despite Sauber consistently languishing at the back of the grid - he has bettered F2 ex-champion Theo Pourchaire 12-6 and shown both impressive pace and maturity for a rookie. With Sauber being taken over by Audi as a factory team for 2026, it is understood the German automotive giants were desperate to lock down Bortoleto for the future but will now have to look elsewhere - with it being so late in the season, they may be slightly compromised in their options. Audi are now understood to be looking for a proven option who can lead the team forward after Pourchaire's slightly underwhelming season, with experienced names such as Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez being circulated throughout the paddock.

#

Further down the grid, Felipe Drugovich has been granted another season at Aston Martin despite being the only full-time driver this season yet to score a championship point. Whilst this news has been met with relative surprise considering Lance Stroll's cut-throat axing last season despite his father holding a majority share in the British team, Aston Martin team principle Mike Krack has told media he believes Drugovich's lack of points this season is not a fair reflection of his ability and much of the blame comes down to the lacklustre car performance/reliability this season. Despite this, the 25-year-old has been near-whitewashed in race results by veteran teammate Fernando Alonso (2-16), with many in the media believing the re-signing is more down to the team lacking options for the future rather than their belief in Drugovich. With Alonso turning 45 next season, they will likely have his seat to fill in 2027 regardless - however, the pool of emerging prospects in the F2 grid (including in-house talent Jak Crawford) will mean the Brazilian must deliver results in 2026 if he is to keep his F1 career alive.

Round 19: Brazil

#

We're at the last Sprint of the year here in Sao Paulo - the weather is usually unpredictable and this year is set to be no different, with rain expected for Saturday and Sunday. Considering the wild conditions this circuit can throw up in the wet, we're looking to minimise the risk and see where we end up if we can avoid the carnage in both the Sprint and the race - the conditions are particularly suited to Nico, who has produced exceptional drives here in the rain before.

#

Sprint Qualifying

#

GEORGE RUSSELL MAKES IT BACK-TO-BACK SPRINT POLES! The imperious close to this season from the Mercedes star continues with a great lap in SQ3.

#

Verstappen is beaten out by six-thousands of a second, with Norris only six-hundredths of a second off Russell for P3 in one of the closest qualifyings of F1 history!

#

Sprint Qualifying Top 10

#

Team Report

#

**Nico Hulkenberg - P20 (+0.220 from SQ2) | Liam Lawson - P11 (+0.399 from SQ3) **
"A mixed session - Nico was caught in traffic for his last SQ1 run, but the general run of form in qualifying has been disappointing since we left Europe. An impressive job from Liam though for P11, and it gives us a position to fight from come the Sprint with rainy conditions likely."

#

Brazilian Sprint Starting Grid

#

Sprint

#

L1/24 - It's lights out and away we go for the Sprint in Sao Paulo, with VER getting the better launch on RUS and into P1! The rain has held off for now, but the clouds are looming and it may threaten in the closing laps

#

L10/24 - Sprint Standings

#

LAW has made his way past POU into P10, with HUL also making moves forward into P17. It seems much of the field is gambling on the rain coming sooner than later and burning through the tyres with the intention of moving to wets - time will tell if this works out.

#

WDC leader NOR has also hurt his chances of sealing the title today on this lap with a lock up, falling from P3 to P7

#

L14/24 - The tension intensifies...

#

L17/24 - The rain finally begins to fall, but will it get heavy enough to justify stopping?

#

It's certainly proving tricky out there though, with ANT spinning off at T1!

#

L19/24 - Ferrari pit HAM from P3 in a big decision! They certainly think the inter will be required, but the rest of the grid continues by the lane

#

On circuit, LAW gets by ALO for P9 in a bold move at T1 - remarkably, HUL has moved up to P13 further behind

#

L20/24 - VER, RUS & LEC pit from the podium places but McLaren keep both their drivers out - the strategy risks are being played out here!

#

L21/24 - BUT THEY BOTH COME IN THE FOLLOWING LAP! NOR is forced to double stack after they deem the conditions too wet to stick out for another three laps - they rejoin P5/P9

#

L21/24 - Sprint Standings

#

LAW now leads the sprint, with HUL in P3 as we risk it all! The challenge now is to hang on - the track is officially declared wet with DRS disabled, but the tyre delta is increasing by the second between our worn mediums and fresh inters across the grid

#

L22/24 - VER retakes the lead swiftly - the defence is now on but with the delta nearly 6s a lap, it may be too much for us to stay in the points

#

L22/24 - 🟡 SAFETY CAR - LEC (RET) & NOR (RET)

#

A LIFELINE FOR BOTH OUR CARS AS THE SAFETY CAR COMES OUT LATE IN THE SPRINT HERE! NOR will not seal the WDC today as he crashes out with LEC at T2 - we may end under yellow flags with LAW in P2 and HUL P5!

#

⚠️ The stewards have announced LEC will receive a 3-place grid penalty for the race tomorrow due to the incident with NOR

#

L24/24 - The safety car stays out and will come in at the end of the final lap - the strategy gamble pays off unbelievably well for us to score 11 points after starting outside the top 10 with both cars!

#

MAX VERSTAPPEN OVERCOMES THE CHAOS TO TAKE THE SPRINT WIN IN BRAZIL! The master of the wet strikes once again, with Red Bull playing the strategy in mixed conditions perfectly

#

AND LIAM LAWSON BRINGS HOME P2!! The safety car may have saved us, but it was a DOTD-winning drive from the young Kiwi before the yellow flag to be in the position to take advantage of it - Russell will be disappointed to come away with P3 all things considered

**Nico Hulkenberg - P5 (Started P20) | Liam Lawson - P2 **(Started P12)
"What an incredible first half of the day! We went into today with the hope of securing any points at all, so to walk away with 11 is unbelievable. We rolled the dice on the strategic risk today and both Liam and Nico executed their part to perfection - in particular, it's great to see Liam on the podium in his last few races with the team. We do owe Charles a drink after that ending though!"

Sprint Notes - Competitor Review

  • Ferrari's strategy team continues to throw away points, with HAM boxed from P3 before anyone else on the grid onto the inters - even with two DNFs ahead of him, he only managed to finish P8.
  • Yet another high-quality drive from Tsunoda to finish P6, with the confirmation of his promotion into the Red Bull seat for 2026 just a matter of time at this point.
  • Something about rain, Brazil and Ocon seems to create the ideal combination - the Frenchman made very impressive progress through the field and will be a threat for points tomorrow if he can qualify further forward later today.

Qualifying

#

Q1: We just scrape through with both cars - LAW in P16 just missing the drop by 0.028s.

#

Q2: LAW (P12) and HUL (P14) are unable to make Q3, but the biggest talking point is VER failing to progress in P11! He has to navigate traffic on his final push lap and is jumped after the flag by home hero BOR, who puts in an incredible lap to knock the Dutchman out by just 0.006s!

#

OSCAR PIASTRI MASTERS THE WET TO TAKE POLE AT INTERLAGOS! In a stormy Q3, he delivers when it counts to record his second pole of the season.

#

Tusnoda delivers an unbelievable lap in the Racing Bull that was just shy of pole, with Norris nearly two-tenths away from the pair in P3

#

Qualifying Top 10

#

Team Report

#

**Nico Hulkenberg - P14 (+0.167 from Q3) | Liam Lawson - P12 (+0.104 from Q3) **
"A more encouraging session across both sides of the garage, with Nico snapping his streak of Q1 exits of late and both him and Liam within two-tenths of Q3. Anything out happen tomorrow with the conditions expected - we start from P9/P10 with others ahead taking grid penalties, so it's all to play for."

#

Brazilian GP Starting Grid

#

⚠️ LEC (P6) has taken an 18-place grid penalty in total, with Ferrari deciding to change multiple powertrain components to go with the Monegasque's 3-place penalty from yesterday's Sprint. HAD (P9) and SAI (P13) have also taken 5-place penalties each for powertrain components, while ANT (P10) will start from pit-lane after a crash in Q3 forced the team to use different-spec components."

#

Qualifying Notes - Competitor Review

  • Tsunoda and Racing Bulls may have (rightly) stolen the headlines, but Bortoleto deserves just as much praise for lining up P5 tomorrow, qualifying ahead of both Ferrari's/Mercedes' in his home race - a magical result particularly after confirmation of his move to McLaren before this weekend.
  • Verstappen will be one to watch given the four-time champion's reputation in the wet from P8, with teammate Ricciardo also desperate to record a podium in his third-last race in Formula 1 after an agonising final season.
  • Considering the conditions, it will also be worth watching Ocon (P13) and Gasly (P18) after they both had difficult sessions today - the two are wet-weather specialists and have delivered here before.
#

Race

#

Race Strategy: With the rain set fall for the entire race today, it'll be a one-stop on the inters - we'll look to run Nico harder at the start to open up a gap and split the run plans for boxing.

#

L1/71 - It's lights out and away we go here in Brazil, with PIA leading the way through the first few corners - TSU holds onto P2 and BOR is up to P4!

#

L6/71 - A fault is developing here for NOR on the engine, with the pitwall at McLaren visibly worried with so many laps to go

#

HAD also goes off deep at T8 with a severe flat-spot on his tyres, re-joining last in P22

#

L8/71 - 🟡 SAFETY CAR - LEC (RET) & ANT (RET)

#

The grid is compacted here as ANT misjudges T8 like HAD two laps prior, only this time he makes contact with LEC and sends both cars into the wall - a double DNF for the Ferrari man this weekend

#

⚠️ The stewards have announced ANT will receive a 3-place grid penalty for the following race due to the incident with LEC

#

L9/71 - Race Standings

#

Interestingly, much of the grid decides to pit under safety car conditions - could they be trying to go all the way to the end on these tyres?

#

L10/71 - 🟢 Green flag

#

L21/71 - The engine issues for NOR are worsening, withHUL & LAW overtaking for P6 and P7
